1820 Settlers National Monument

Description

The 1820 Settlers National Monument, which honours the contribution to South African society made by the British 1820 Settlers, overlooks Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. A living monument, it commemorates the English language as much as the Settlers themselves. The building was designed by John Sturrock, Sturrock was inspired by the work of Louis Kahn.National Arts FestivalThe Monument is closely linked with the National Arts Festival, often known simply as the Grahamstown Festival. Ever since the monument's opening on 13 July 1974, the festival has been held there every year, except for in 1975. Virtually all possible venues in Grahamstown are used during the festival, but the Monument is the anchor of the event and the biggest venue too. The main theatre in the monument complex is named after Guy Butler.Fire in 1994The monument was devastated by a fire in 1994 and rebuilt and was officially re-dedicated by Nelson Mandela in May 1996.

We stopped briefly on the way to a meeting one year. A nice view from the monument and some interesting dated stones! Won't rush back with the family though. :
I cannot wait to go again. The views are magnificent. The architecture is remarkable. It has considerable infrastructure.
great view and a great place to take some snaps
One of the best and most humbling things to do when visiting a new place is being able to view that place from a higher vantage point and enjoy the full sprawl of a city or town. The Settlers Monument is the best place to do that in Grahamstown. I travelled to Grahamstown for the 2015 National Arts Festival, and despite all the exciting events happening throughout the town, the Settlers Monument and the view from the hill was still my favourite thing about the trip.
Always been an amazing venue and host to many of my favourite events. True heritage site and an absolute must visit during festival. I'll be back soon
Beautiful place, quiet and relaxed... Recommended for the historians
No guided tours and few information boards. A pamphlet with history and information would have been useful. Staff were very apathetic. Good views of Grahamstown and surrounds.
The venue and the scenary view of Grahamstown plantation is always refreshing. Great place to host any event of upto 1000 audience's or attendees.
Sci Fest Africa is 2019 what a great experience, well organized event for all ages a must see if your a teacher or interested in the science.
Went to watch the festival 2018 show #Desperate.... Simply loved it...
