I studied producing at the AFDA Johannesburg campus for 3 years and after a rather ungodly amount of money spent at the institution after all that time, I got horribly penalized for a very impressive pyrotechnics special effects stunt I had arranged for my 3rd year graduation film. After pulling it off it looked incredible, and I did so with much input from ACTUAL industry professionals, the faculty decided to punish me by deducting my overall marks until it was so low I ended up failing my 3rd year a MONTH before graduation. All that time and effort for absolutely nothing. I urge any persons who are considering studying here to please reconsider as they are a selfish institution who care not for people or education, but only money. As a student of film you will be 100% better off finding work within the film industry itself or to go to another institution that will most likely be much more affordable and respectful towards its students. Note: Even though I'm posting this review publicly, I refuse to tell any industry professionals that I attended AFDA as the real professionals will not touch or hire any AFDA students due to lack of experience and gross incompetence.
Clearly they are a joke of a school which I would not recommend anyone to attend even if it was free of charge or they paid you to. The faculty, leadership, and staff are racist and discriminate against people of color and foreign nationals. They recklessly mishandled all my documents throughout the admission process and they misplaced them upon my transfer request amongst various academic policies breached. It was such an epic screw up by the very unprofessional leadership/administration staff of the Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Johannesburg campuses. Of course the fees are very overblown to pay their staff to discriminate against top students, while they continue to offer low quality academics which is reflected in the below par teaching curriculum. Not to mention the lack of any beneficial professional exposure, and the very poorly built infrastructure throughout all its locations. Once gain, I urge all tertiary seekers abroad and local to avoid this extremely terrible school in all its locations.
Looks like a decent school but registration process is in shambles. What's the point of sending students a sms to come get a forum, then making them queue for 4 hours. My daughter knows what she wants to study, so just email me the forms, let her connoisseur it and we email it back,? No waiting time. I know email is a new technology but I'm sure it will take off. I'm worried, if this is what the registration process is, will classes be any better?
Absolutely no consideration for students who are majoring in technical discplines, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rushed syllabus as a resort to saving the academic year, unfulfilled remote gear assistance for remote test shoots - This school expects its students to be patient with its shortcomings yet it puts extra pressure on us to deliver, within the most rushed delivery period ever - As a final year Cinematography Student, I'm beyond appalled at the unethical school program that the institution has been pushing for the past 3 weeks - Back-to-back deadlines, which would have normally required more time to complete. If I could, I wouldnt even give a rating.
Best option of my life, if you need more ask me!
Nice campus, excellent for somone looking to get into the film industry as they provide hands on experience.
The staff was very Friendly and kind in helping us.thank you for helping us.
I loved the campus, the staff were so friendly and welcoming.
Woman at the front gate is incredibly rude and unhelpful. Terrible to have her be the first impression many people get of your institution.
Very hospitable beautiful place
