WHAT IS PILATES?
The Pilates method was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. He often referred to this method of exercise as “contrology”; using the mind to control the muscles. Pilates is an exercise system that benefits people at every level of fitness and at every stage of life. Pilates can help you build strength, improve posture and achieve a better standard of overall health.
The Pilates Method comprises a repertoire of more than 500 exercises performed on a range of equipment. A session at BASE Pilates studio takes about 55 minutes, with each client receiving individual attention in a semi-private class of no more than six. One-on-one classes are also available if you would prefer. Clients start at their own level and progress at their own pace. Exercises are tailored specifically for each individual based on their health and fitness goals and the presence of any prior injuries. Routines change from session to session, so there is always a strong sense of variety and achievement. As you progress the workout becomes increasingly more challenging. Two or three sessions per week will help attain optimum results, but even a weekly class will provide valuable benefits.
Pilates movements stretch one muscle group while strengthening another, and require a great deal of abdominal control, mental focus and precision. The result is a toned body, without bulking and shortening muscles. Pilates is one of the few exercise methods that can be safely undertaken during recovery and rehabilitation from injury and is an excellent discipline for maintaining health and fitness during pregnancy
PILATES MYTHS
1. Pilates is easy.
A Pilates class may look easy to the casual observer because many of the exercises are done slowly due to the great emphasis on awareness and control. The truth is Pilates is very adaptable; it can be customized to fit any level of fitness.
2. Pilates only works your abs.
Although Pilates work is centred around your core musculature, it also incorporates the upper and lower extremities for a dynamic workout. A lot of emphasis is placed on the core because without stability and control of those muscles your limbs do not function efficiently.
3. I am too old to do Pilates.
Pilates is for all ages! Programs can be tailored to meet the needs of any age group. Currently BASE Pilates’ oldest client is 80 years of age
4. Pilates is just for women.
Pilates is not a gender biased form of exercise. Although more women tend to participate in Pilates, there are great benefits for men too. After all, Pilates was invented by a man! Pilates exercise has also been proven to benefit all athletes; dancers, gymnasts, runners and golfers to name a few!
The BENEFITS of consistent practice of the Pilates method include:
• A toned and more supple body – long lean muscles without bulk
• Flatter stomach
• Improves Scoliosis and many problems associated with bad posture by restoring postural alignment
• Less incidence of back pain
• Increased strength, flexibility and balance
• Increased bone density
• Reduce stress, relieve tension, boost energy
• Builds Core Strength – by challenging deep abdominal activation to support the core
• One of the safest forms of exercise for pre and post natal pregnancy
• Improves your sex life
• Promotes an overall feeling of well being
So when you make Pilates a regular part of your fitness programme you can expect a longer, leaner looking body, increased energy and stamina, fewer aches and pains and relief from the stresses of every-day life.
