Blyde River Canyon

Description

The Blyde River Canyon is a significant natural feature of South Africa, located in Mpumalanga, and forming the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment. It is 25km in length and is, on average, around 750m deep. The Blyderivierpoort Dam, when full, is at an altitude of 665m. The canyon consists mostly of red sandstone. The highest point of the canyon, Mariepskop, is 1944m above sea level, whilst its lowest point where the river leaves the canyon is slightly less than 561m above sea level. This means that by some measure the canyon is 1383m deep. While it is difficult to compare canyons world-wide, Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons on Earth, and it may be the largest 'green canyon' due to its lush subtropical foliage. It has some of the deepest precipitous cliffs of any canyon on the planet. It is the second largest canyon in Africa, after the Fish River Canyon, and is known as one of the great wonders of nature on the continent.Possibly the best view in the whole of the Blyde River Canyon is of the "Three Rondavels", huge, round rocks, thought to be reminiscent of the houses or huts of the indigenous people, known as rondavels. This canyon is part of the Panorama Route. This route starts at the town Graskop and includes God's Window, the Pinnacle and Bourke's Luck Potholes.

Close your eyes and picture the Grand Canyon, now fill it with lush greenery - that’s Blyde River Canyon. It’s simply gorgeous, probably one of the most beautiful places in the world!
Don’t even consider missing this one out! We traveled in South Africa for 3 weeks and this is one of the most amazing views we have seen. A must.

One of the best views I’ve ever seen
A breath taking place, if you are like me and love nature, please do yourself a favor and go see this place. It’s usually misty so I’d advise anyone to go early or least check the weather.

With total area of 26946 hectares, the Blyde River Canyon now officially known as the Motlatse Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the United States and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, and is the largest "green canyon" due to its particularly lush subtropical covering, with the deepest precipitous cliffs of any canyon on the planet. Being one of the most-visited attractions in South Africa, the Blyde River Canyon is 26 kilometres in length and is, on average, around 800m deep. The dam itself, when full, is at an altitude of 665 meters 2182 feet. The Blyde River Canyon Reserve extends along the Blyde River Canyon's winding path, which at every turn offers more and more impressive views over sheer edges droper personing 800 meters into the riverbed. Blyde River Canyon Reserve is situated against the Greater Drakensberg escarpment and includes natural wonders such as the Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels, Pinnacle Rock and God's Window. Many visitors to this region enjoy the visual splendour of combining the Panorama Route with exceptional game viewing in the Kruger National Park to create a spectacular itinerary in Mpumalanga. The rich and varied plant life is influenced by extreme Climate, a range of altitudes and various soil conditions. This variety of plant life supports an equally rich and varied fauna. The Grassland supports Grey Rhebuck and the rare Oribi as well as rodents, reptiles, seed-eating birds and plenty of insects. Kudu prefer the cover of wooded bushveld and bushbuck and bushpig move amongst the luxuriant growth on the Riverbanks. All five of South Africa's primates somango monkey, nocturnal greater and lesser bushbabies, chacma baboons and vervet monkeys can be see in the The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Hippopotamus and crocodile live in and around the rivers and wetlands of Swadini Dam, as do waterbirds and otters. Almost every type of habitat that attracts birds is found in the The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and all three South African species of Loerie can be found in the Reserve. * Some photos courtesy of Internet. Thanks!
We got to bost cruise by accident , walked in and there was someone who did not show up . Great experience, good views , kids enjoyed taking photos .
Stunning views all around. Had a great boat cruise ride with the tour guide explaining the rich history behind the place, the type of ecosystem services around and the different species within the area. Got to see the Three Rondavels from the river side and the different caves surroundings the river. Absolutely worth visiting since it’s one of the larger canyons in Africa.
