Cape Town Ostrich Ranch

About

The Cape Town Ostrich Ranch (25min from Cape Town on the N7, Van Schoorsdrif) offers a restaurant, luxury shop, ostrich museum and fun guided ostrich tours

Description

Tours

The Ostrich Ranch offers guided tours in English, Afrikaans, German and French. Tours in other languages can be arranged, given 24 hours notice. We have 5 dedicated tour guides that are ready and waiting to take groups as soon as they arrive. Group tours are run as requested and a tour guide is assigned to the group for the duration of their visit. The tour follows a 45-minute informative trail, including the museum, the Ostrich leather Factory, West Coast White-Necked Ostriches, Black-Necked Ostriches, emus , ostrich chicks and incubator, with spectacular views of Table Mountain and the surrounding countryside.

The highlight of the trail is the ostrich show, where each member of the tour has the opportunity to sit on a live ostrich, with Table Mountain as a backdrop. The tour travels through the ostrich breeding enclosures on a 200 m wheelchair-friendly walkway. An experienced tour guide will explain the origin and reasons for ostrich farming, while enlightening you on many amazing facts about the largest bird in the world. It is not uncommon to see chicks that have just hatched or witness an egg being laid or see the majestic mating dance of the male ostrich.

Leather and Ostrich Egg Factory

The museum and factory have now settled into their new home which has turned out to be an ideal start to the tour. This building houses a bigger, improved museum and the factory, decoupage egg factory and feather duster making room. Your tour will start here, where you can witness the history of the ostrich and the making of leather products.

See the ostrich leather craftsmen convert an ostrich skin into beautiful work of art. Many years of experience, combined with exotic hide has added an interesting extra to the tour of the Ostrich Ranch.

View the process of ostrich eggs being transformed from their raw natural state into fine decorative piece. The Ostrich Ranch has decided to put this whole process in full view for the visitors to enjoy. This also allows for personalized eggs to be created.

Ostrich Leather and Curio Shop

Our Ostrich Leather Factory Shop houses an extensive range of ostrich leather products such as belts, shoes, handbags and wallets. We have one of the largest selections of ostrich products in the country. Ostrich skins may also be purchased. The majority of the products are manufactured by ourselves, allowing us to produce high quality items at the lowest prices in Cape Town. The factory where the goods are manufactured is combined with the museum where our tour starts. This is an added feature of our tour and allows the tourist to see how the goods are made.
We offer a large selection of locally crafted, high quality curios that are very competitively priced. The range includes a selection of painted, decoupage, carved and plain ostrich eggs, ostrich feathers and boas. The shop also stocks many African carvings – both stone and wood.

Restaurant and Tea Patio

Our customers are invited to enjoy tea, coffee and cold-drinks on the patio before or after the tour starts. A range of snacks and meals is available from our garden menu and the bar is fully licensed. The restaurant seats 150 people, is air-conditioned and situated in the Cape Dutch-styled farmhouse. We specialize in ostrich dishes – offering both a garden menu for the general public and various set menus for tour operators. Other menus are available by prior arrangement and will be individually priced.

Boma

Our traditional African boma-style restaurant sets the scene and atmosphere for very entertaining functions. The boma can seat up to 150 people and houses a separate internal bar, private outside area, bonfire, heating lamps and much more. It must be noted that the boma is an outdoor eating/entertainment venue with expansive lawns, and although it gives shelter from the sun and wind, use of it is subject to the weather conditions. The Boma is ideal for a year-end function, corporate groups, weddings and birthdays with a difference.

Scratch Patch

Due to the historic relationship between ostriches and semi-precious stones, the Ostrich Farm is really excited to have a Scratch Patch and Mineral World outlet right here on the premises. Southern Africa is often referred to as the “gemstone capital of the world” because of the incredible mineral wealth that is found here – and Scratch Patch and Mineral World is the ideal place for visitors to experience some of this amazing wealth and variety firsthand.

The Scratch Patch has become world-famous as a place where you can have fun “scratching” for unique and colorful tumble-polished gemstones from countless thousands that literally cover the floor. Whether you are young or old, a visit to the Scratch Patch is an experience that one doesn’t forget!

At the mineral World Gemstone Shop you will find an incredible variety of gemstone products. It’s the perfect store to find inexpensive gift items to take to friends and family back home – or to treat yourself to something really special like a unique gemstone carving, an investment gemstone piece, or gorgeous gemstone jewelry.

This ostrich farm is more than a farm; it’s a whole experience in what can only be described as beautiful surroundings. It’s free to enter and the lawns are manicured for summer picnics. The restaurant serves well-prepared food and they cater for both indoor and outdoor seating. If it’s cold, you can use one of the many blankets and there’s a fireplace to keep warm. The food is tasty and the service is top class. There’s also the store onsite selling premium ostrich leather products, gem stones, eggs and feathers. Pricing isn’t cheap, but the quality is excellent. You can pick up bracelets for about R50 $2 and the kids can pick gem stones from their own scratch patch for about R42 per bag. The ostrich museum is part of a tour on offer for about R109 $5 per person and you can get that picture of you standing on a real ostrich egg. The farms animals outside provide entertainment for young kids and it’s safe because they are safely fenced off. I’m not so sure about the geese though ;- On our visit, someone had stolen all the goats, but no doubt those will be replaced. A lovely experience, not too difficult to find and caters for a wide variety of people.
The ostrich farm is one of the best places I've visited. There are ostriches, ducks, chickens and goats and you can feed them. You can also ride an ostrich without walking with it. There is a store that sells things made of ostriches, and there is a restaurant that serves ostrich steak and burgers, and the taste was very delicious
Very beautiful farm we enjoy the tour we paid for the tour and the corn to feed the ostrich and still the guid want more money for him self and when we give him some he doesn't like it Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Went to see what there was... Sweet restaurant and big ostrich leather curio shop. HUGE scratch patch inside. Small animal enclosure with a lamb, some ducks and turkeys that we could also go into with the kids. Jungle gyms for the smaller kids. Not super exciting unless you go in to see the ostriches. Tours available and advisable if you want to see the ostriches properly. Only 2 were visible from outside the fenced off area.
Finally adding my review to this place.. I took all 3 my kids for their school projects.. did the tour 3 times and everytime the kids enjoyed their experience.. their projects were awesome.. they stood on an Ostrich egg.. we bought some dusters etc. They went for the ostrich ride. The guide explained about ostriches being attracted to shiny things and only while driving on the N2 at another farm did we see what that meant when all the ostriches ran toward the car as the mirror was reflecting in their eyes.. it was amazing to see after learning from this farm.. I will post more pics soon when I find them .. buy a must for ur kids
Great place to take the kids, perfect outdoor area, no picnic unless food is bought from their. Overall pretty cool. Service could do with some attentionVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
We've done the Ostrich Tour before, so on our last visit we just came to the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon for an early dinner or very late lunch. We sat down at the outside seating area of the restaurant and ordered a burger, salad and kiddies Ostrich Strips. While we were waiting I bought some dusters in the shop and the kids enjoyed the scratch patch on site. The medium bag costs R45 and they were keen to find the most precious gem stones! In front of the restaurant is a huge green lawn where the kids can run around, swing on the trees, visit some farm animals to pet them or make use of the playground. There is a jungle gym, swings, slides and a sandpit. It's a lovely stop over for families and even better if you combine your trip with an ostrich tour. We were just a little too late on a Sunday afternoon...
You can easily spend the whole morning / afternoon here! We had lunch while the kids enjoyed the playground. Menu is to the point, but I believe everyone will be able to find something they like on it. Thereafter we had the guided tour presented by Omar Omar. If you have 45min to spare - its totally worth it!! He is such a friendly guide and very knowledgeable when it comes to the animals, he even offered more than one family photo with lots of tips on taking the best angled pictures. They also have “boer bokke” you can hand feed at no cost, apart from the feed itself. Definitely worth the visit!
One of the best places to spend your time as a tourist, they have a farm of Ostrich where you can feed them, and then there is a great restaurant to eat the Ostrich Meat! Very recommended.
A great ostrich farm with a tour guide. The tour was interesting and you will find a handbag manufacturer of ostrich leather also, you can feed the ostrich At the end of this amazing tour you will find a restaurant that provide ostrich meat
