We all have to live within our bodies every day, for the rest of our lives. So when it comes to orthopaedic surgery to repair injuries, it is obviously really important to get best of breed skills. The Rosebank Sports Clinic is a brand that was clearly built on good intentions at some point in time and the brand endures as an echo of its past in my experience, which might explain why it is frequently recommended. There are also numerous specialists at the centre, which makes it a bit of a “solution for everyone” kind of place. I have found the orthopaedic talent on the top floor to be at best average, if not poor. Staff in the “clinic” tend to recommend colleagues and feed the machine at 9 Sturdee Avenue, even though they are not the best in the business. I had to have a labral repair done to my shoulder after falling with an outstretched arm during a run. It’s worse off than before, frequently aches, and feels similar to when you get tooth-ache from eating really cold ice cream. I regret the surgery, which by all intents and purposes was a simple one. I was stitched like a dog and developed a mild wound infection. But that pales in comparison to the re-attachment of my Achilles heel, which 14 months later has left me with a Haglunds deformity, pain down the right of my foot, persistent insertive tendonitis, a messy scar and unable to wear shoes, let alone run. The surgeon claims the Haglunds was there before. It wasn’t. I won’t speak of the surgeon’s choice of Busamed Modderfontein, as that will become an essay. Now I have to go under the knife again to repair the mess, and even though I’m not religious, I pray to god that it is a successful surgery as I would really like to get running again. Needless to say, I won’t be going back to the Rosebank Sports Clinic for the remedial work. Amongst the terrible experience I’ve had on the upper floors, there are some really fantastic people in Physiotherapy on the ground floor. The amazing Debbie Davidson is the most wonderful human and so good at her craft. She really cares about her patients, unlike the shoulder and foot surgeons, who know they’ve botched my surgeries, but couldn’t be bothered to learn from them and demonstrate some curiosity with the outcome of my surgeries. Of course, some of their work will be successful. But what is the success rate when it counts? Be careful and do your homework before rushing into surgery. The top guys exist as independent operators, not part of this machine – you just need to ask around.
They went above and beyond to ensure I was looked after, thank-you Barry & Dr Mehtar! I arrived at 07h30 without an appointment, just asking for a sonar referral for a suspected calf injury. Barry took one look at me and jumped to assist... tests concluded Achilles rupture. He talked me through the next steps and options so reassuringly, contacting Dr Mehtar who came through from Linksfield especially, and making me so comfortable I was even able to laugh! Amazing, and deeply appreciated!
Careful with one doctor “Ike” whose there, if you go with a painful neck problem, he will tell you to get a “boyfriend and a good massage, that’s all you need” plus a good slap of medicine that takes the pain away for a bit. I was so appalled.
