We arrived late morning and it was very quiet in the market. The parking was good as well as service facilities. All the stores displayed mainly touristy items. An interesting morning but would be better to go early. Definitely visit the spice shop and Aunty Pam's food store both excellent.
Not in a nice area of Durban, near the taxi rank, and we were warned not to dwell outside of the market. Most shops sell either ethnical items, spices or muti, not much else. I did find myself a nice zulu drum that I was hunting for.
This market has changed in recent years from being predominately an Indian cultural market to a local Zulu cultural market serving the cultural needs of the surrounding communities. There is a vast array of African in particular Zulu cultural items being offered at extremely good prices. This trend reflects changes in the Indian culture, a culture of the past that no longer exists today and the the great need and huge market to serve our local African cultural needs. I highly recommend this market to both local customers and tourists.
Wide selection of ocean products. A quick walk around provides a good selection to choose from. The outside can be intimidating and eyesore. Does create a feeling of uneasyness. Will need to be persuaded for a revisit.
Well, safety is questionable. It is unclean and smells of all sorts of things. The buildings, really need a redo and looking after. They are in terrible condition. The only good side is that everything is more affordable and it makes certain needs more reachable to those who cannot afford them in other areas of town. Including myself.
Not the same like it use to be neck in the days of the Indian market. No attraction anymore. One get the feeling that you in a high risk area and can't linger around too long. It's not the wealth of Indian culture and unique merchandise you use to get like 20 years ago. Not worth going there anymore. It use to be on our itinerary whenever you in Durban. Even the name change suggest it's not what it use to be. No more Indian market. Just a normal flea market. Percy Martin
A shopping hub for uniquely different purchases at reasonable prices Got a stunning pair of Prada copied boots for just R260? There are many stores with competive pricing and it is best to walk around before making a final.choice on your purchase
What a dodgy place to visit/buy things, was in Durban on holiday from Pretoria, and this area makes PTA CBD and Marabastad look like small
I love to have a power to tell them the owners of the properties to renew every place So we all look good Victoria Street Durban .
Super congested, just be vigilant. The area was surprisingly quite clean, big up to eThekwini Municipality for that one! If you are here for a bargain buy, you may not be so lucky but one thing I can assure you of is that you won't go home empty handed. This place has everything and anything you can think of
