Fogarty's Bookshop

About

Your specialist bookstore for nearly 70 years

Description

Fogarty’s Bookshop was started in 1946 by Basil Fogarty in a basement shop in 59 Main Street (now Govan Mbeki Ave). The bookshop is one of the oldest independent bookshops in South Africa. Basil was joined by his new wife from Scotland, Eleanor and together they became a mecca for book & art lovers. Even holding exhibitions for the likes of Irma Stern. After 59 Main Street, the shop moved to the Library Building on Market Square. And, some years later, to Traduna Mall in Main Street where it stayed for over 20 years. At that stage, the business was taken over by Teresa Fogarty (daughter of Basil & Eleanor) and Terry Impey (Teresa’s partner). With Terry’s help, branches were opened in 6th Ave Walmer & later The Bridge, Greenacres. When the Main Street branch closed, the Walmer Park shop was opened. Later The Bridge branch closed and joined Walmer.
We have been at Walmer Park for over 14 years.
Fogarty’s is now firmly established in Walmer Park & serves the book loving public of Port Elizabeth (and the surrounding areas) with all their reading requirements.
Ordering & sourcing books has always been one of the services we offer, along with helpful service to our loyal customers.
Please contact us with any questions about books and, we will gladly try to assist you.

Sadly Terry, Basil & Eleanor are no longer with us

Friendly staff, knowledgeable and what a easy accessable parking,. A beautiful spot in PE.
Always a good experience to visit this remarkable bookshop. The people are very friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable. Best of all, if they don’t have what you want, they’ll get it for you.
I love browsing through the shelves at Fogarty's. Unique and independent bookshop. You always find something special here when it is not available elsewhere. Theresa and her staff are awesome. I am a publisher and my 2 authors did not have issues stocking their books here.
Fantastic little bookshop if you're looking for nice book at a good price or a puzzle
Fogarty's has been my fav bookstore since I started buying my own books in the late 1980's. Always wish I had more money to spend. So great for me, as a publisher and writer, that they now stock some of my books too.
Many happy memories of the bookstore in Main road, Traduna mall, near the city hall. School kids would have received some book vouchers and told to select their favorite books from all those interesting titles, and the children would get the books presented to them at the school end of year prize giving with an ex libras pasting of the prize giving on the inside cover. Nowadays, if you don't see what you want, the family store will search and order it for you.
Such a pleasure to visit Fogarty's after a long absence on my part. I found so many books for my grandchildren! And NOT being situated in a mall is the best! Give Theresa and her bookstore a visit. You won't be disappointed.
I love Forgarty's I have been buying books there for 45 years. They were in Grace Street years ago if I am correct. Support independent bookshops
Simply an excellent bookstore. Whenever I am in Port Elizabeth, I like to browse through Fogarty's Africana and history collection. It not only consists of the best-known books, but also of collector's items and unusual titles. Both English- and Afrikaans-readers will find something they love on the shelves. Some of my finest books about South Africa come straightly from Fogarty's. In addition, I have always found the staff to be very helpful and knowledgeable.
Lovely ladies! The owner is the darling, I luv them!
