It requires trust and little bit of a leap of faith to plan the family trip of a lifetime to a continent that you have never been to, to countries that you have never been to, and plan with someone you have never met. So let me tell you that your trust is well placed with Giltedge. In particular, our contact Nikki Theron was simply amazing. We told her what we wanted to get out of the trip and what was important to us and with very little guidance, she NAILED IT. I could not imagine a better planned trip. I can also honestly say, but for her guidance, we would not have had as special a time. All the accommodations were top notch, the experiences were beyond belief and the people made everything magical. I can highly recommend Giltedge and will absolutely use them for any of our future trips to Africa.
We just returned from a truly splendid 11 days in South Africa and could not be happier that we used Giltedge. We started talking to them in 2019 for a 2020 trip that we only just took, so we've gotten to know them very well! When we started looking for a travel agency, I wanted something that would be flexible, allowing us to book some of our own activities and accommodations, but willing to step in and book some of the excursions, transport, etc that I didn't want to. And of course, I wanted an agency with in-depth knowledge of safari lodge options. Giltedge totally fit the bill for us. They were willing to do as much or as little as we needed, which many of the other luxury tour operators didn't want to do. We worked closely with Desiree based in Cape Town who took care of all of our needs and we had a few hiccups including a cancelled flight. Giltedge staff were friendly, supportive, accommodating, patient, and responsive. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a travel agency and we will be calling them we inevitably return to Southern Africa!
Tanya was amazing and planned the perfect honeymoon for my husband and I! Everything was planned perfectly and we felt relaxed while traveling knowing that all the details were well organized. All of the accommodations were lovely, we would definitely recommend Giltedge!
Dear Fred and Monique, Yes, we had a good trip. It was an excellent experience and a successful result. The accommodation at Sanctuary Olonana was exactly what we were looking for in our experience. The location on the Mara River provided sounds of cascading water and grunting hippos and almost no man-made sounds….perfect! The staff was well-trained and very friendly and helpful. During most of our stay, there was only 1 other couple there who we got alone with just fine, so we had the place mostly to ourselves….perfect! Our guide Nelson made a big difference in our experience. He was very friendly, highly-skilled and very knowledgeable about animals, plants, history and culture of the valley and the Maasai people, whom he belonged. He had a great sense of humor and we thoroughly enjoyed his company. He is an animal finder and perhaps the only guide who found, leopard, cheetah and rhino at that time. We were fortunate to have him as our guide so many thanks to whomever selected him for us. Good call. The balloon ride was another good experience because we had a small basket balloon which held us plus 3 others guests and our pilot. Our pilot Carlos was very serious about his safety briefing which we appreciated and was a good narrator of our journey. We were very glad that we were in a small basket balloon which resulted in a better experience compared to the other people who were in a large basket balloon. So, whoever made that decision for us, it was another good call. Perfect! Thomas Anyumba took very good care of us in Nairobi and on the way into Kenya and out of Kenya. He is clearly extremely competent and knowledgeable and able to get things done which was very helpful to us considering that immediate changes had to be made to keep our trip on track, because we just missed our connection on the way into Kenya. And we enjoyed his company and our discussions very much. He’s a real asset to your enterprise. Many thanks to you and everyone who helped make our experience into a very successful trip. We booked our safari with Giltedge through Mangata Travel based on a recommendation from a friend. Things started off well and we built a terrific itinerary. Shortly after we made our deposit which pretty much locked us in, Mangata became less responsive. As we poured over the itinerary in detail, we found several holes and contradictions. Some of our questions were answered but some were ignored. We started communicating directly with Giltedge in order to get answers. When we landed in Africa and met with the local Giltedge representative, he was working with an outdated itinerary. The next morning, we met our guide/driver and discovered that his itinerary did not fully match ours. For example, at our first stop - Lake Manyara National Park - we had purchased four game drives, but he was only given passes for two. Not a good start. From our first contact with Mangata, our #1 priority for our trip was to experience the great migration of wildebeest and other animals. Having never been to Africa, we relied on the experience claimed by Mangata and their partner, Giltedge Africa. Mangata placed us at a lodge in central Serengeti. When we met our guide/driver at the beginning of the trip at Kilimanjaro airport and reviewed the itinerary, he told us that regardless of how much or little rain there was, the migration is NEVER in central Serengeti in August. He offered to take us to the Masai Mara, but that would entail an 11-hour round trip on terrible roads just to fight the crowds to spend a brief time to see just a small part of the migration. I didn't think it was worth it. But thanks to our great guide, we had a wonderful week in Tanzania where we saw everything there is to see, except for the migration -- for which I will always resent Mangata and Giltedge. After our safari, our plan was to go from the Serengeti to Uganda for gorilla trekking. It seemed the most direct way was to fly from Seronera to Entebbe. But Mangata told us that such flights don't exist. So Mangata routed us from Seronera to Kilimanjaro, then to Nairobi, and then to Entebbe - all in one day. About 2 weeks before our trip I noticed we were not yet given our tickets for the first leg to Kilimanjaro. Note: this is something I believe the travel agent should have caught. I asked for the tickets. When they finally came, it showed an additional stop in Arusha. This didn't seem to bother our travel agent. But four flights in one day seems excessive to us. One slip-up and we could miss a connection. Since we had expensive gorilla trekking permits for a specific day, we could not afford any problems. After we complained, miraculously we were booked on a flight from Seronera to Entebbe. Mangata and Giltedge said they were"calling in a favor" to get this flight. But once in Africa we learned that this is a regularly scheduled daily flight! This entire run-around was totally avoidable and caused a lot of unnecessary angst for us. Apparently, Mangata does not have the experience claimed and adequate attention to detail needed to arrange a trip like this. We will not be booking through them again. The biggest positive by far, though -- and for which we are thankful to Giltedge -- was our guide/driver, Meshack Godson from Arusha. He must be the best guide in all of Tanzania! His knowledge and instincts were top notch. And I learned quite a bit of Swahili from him. What we realized is that no matter how much you plan your safari, your guide is truly the key to it all. And we lucked out big time with Meshack!!!
I had a fantastic time traveling around Cape Town with Giltedge. We were able to see many different landmarks and animals and were able to learn a lot about the history of South Africa. Giltedge is a nice, safe, fun, informative way to learn more about the country!
