Awesome, very welcome and real careing
Went there this morning. I wish I could have stayed and listened to the pastors sermon - he seemed like a nice guy, but the music was so loud and overwhelming that I left within the 1st 2 minutes they started playing the music. As first time visitor, no one even bothered to greet me either. Not sure why churches have this urge to make their music sound like a rock and roll concert?
EDIT: August 16, 2020 I will go into more detail about the church, as I feel enough time has passed to grant some clarity. My sole reason for joining the church was to be able to meet people and network. I struggled to adjust with the more "distant" life in the city, so for a Christian like me, the most logical choice would be going to church. I always thought of myself as socially awkward, so I didn't know how to "act" in a church. Some may say it doesn't matter, but if you really want to be technical, it does. I had some initial issues with the church teachings, although I did agree with the core of their message - the Gospel of Jesus. I am not a cessationist, although I do consider myself sceptical of prophecy and "signs and wonders". This is actually a plus in this church compared to other charismatic churches - signs and wonders are not as exuberant or expected to happen, although those from reformed churches may still find themselves at odds with the prayers for "outpouring of the Holy Spirit". This is the city, so the "distance" between strangers still applies even in church. It is notable that some other reviewers took issue with the same thing, although I eventually adjusted my perspective and was able to accept it. Still, in church, a simple "hello" and a smile goes a long way. You don't need to force yourself to speak to every stranger, but you can just acknowledge their presence. Laying on of hands - this happened the first time I went there. I don't like any form of physical contact, so this was a bit jarring. I eventually told them not to lay hands on me, and while they took it personally, they accepted and respected the difference. This does, however, bring to light an element of concern - the Bible does say to be wary of who lays hands on you. 1 Timothy 5:22. Tithing - it is still greatly encouraged to give your tithe, although I never gave to test the waters. Money is a controversial issue in church, and I was waiting to see if someone would give me an askew glance for not giving. Nothing. The pastor eventually found a way for me to contribute without financially giving, and that was to help with the projector and audio. Some may ask for more detail as to why I didn't give? Well, when I first attended Grace Cov, I introduced myself to the leadership, and one of the questions I was asked was my salary. Culturally, this is a huge faux pas, and it made me wary of the motivations of the church. The church made a big deal of giving as you felt "lead", and well, I didn't feel lead to give money due to the initial experience. Note that with many of my negative experiences, there were also positives. I had some initial differences with the church members differences which I considered petty - I'm sure those involved will know what I mean, and if not, please contact me for more info, but those were eventually resolved over time and we were able to do church together quite happily. Gossip is a problem in the church. I did not participate in any gossip, but I had church members do so inside and outside of the church - through "Life Groups" as well. While some concerns raised in these "gossip sessions" were well-founded, and gossip was most decidedly preached against by Craig in many sermons, there needs to be a more practical assessment of what counts as gossip and what doesn't, e.g. talking about someone versus badmouthing them behind their back. The leadership of the church were part of this problem. The church has ties to NCMI, which I had doctrinal issues with, although I did not see a lot of the NAR creep in the church. Still, the NAR is vast movement with huge issues; those who want to know more can contact me, as I've already reached the word limit for this review. : It's a good, caring church that celebrates diversity and strives to be welcoming. They are a bit socially awkward, and natural human errors do occur. Still, they did help a lot in a time where I most certainly needed the encouragement. My advice; be honest with leadership when you have concerns.
