Groenkloof Nature Reserve

Description

The Groenkloof Nature Reserve, located adjacent to the Fountains Valley at the southern entrance to Pretoria, was the first game sanctuary in Africa. The reserve of 600 ha is managed by the Department of Nature Conservation. The National Heritage Monument is located within the reserve. It is flanked by Christina de Wit Avenue and Nelson Mandela Drive, that separate it from the Voortrekker Monument and Klapperkop Nature Reserves. In aggregate these reserves conserve some 1,400 ha of bankenveld vegetation which is threatened in Gauteng. The reserve is open to day visitors from 5:30 to 19:00 in summer, and 7:00 to 18:00 in winter.HistoryThis valley on the southern outskirts of Pretoria was proclaimed a game sanctuary by President Paul Kruger on 25 February 1895. Its main purpose was to protect the shy and timid oribi, which occurred there, and other game that were being depleted by hunters. For many years however, the reserve was leased for exotic timber plantation, to supply wood and paper. A memorial wall is to be seen beside traces of the homestead of the early pioneer Lucas Bronkhorst, who settled here around 1839.In April 2015 the head of the reserve, David Boshoff, was suspended and evicted from his council home by the Tshwane metro HR manager. The eviction came in the fifth month of a strike by the majority of the reserve's workers, who reportedly negated their agreement with management to return to work in February.

Great trails. Friendly staff and passing faces. A bit of litter on the trail, however all the bins along the way were freshly lined. Great prevelance and variety of birds and mammals. Went a bit late in the day, so the yellow trail 10.5km was much quieter; however as with all daytime activities in the warmer months, it is recommended to get out in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not as harsh. Horse riding and 4X4 trails available. Horses were stabled well with clean water provided. Suitable for all walks of life; families, adrenaline junkies, nature lovers, tourists, patriots and more.
We've been there for a fantastic day. We made the yellow lop which is 10.5 Km. It was a little difficult but it worth very clean and nice staff. All the trail has indicators to help you to find the path Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I enjoyed my time at one of Africa's oldest nature reserve ,dating back to the very late 1800s. I come for one thing which is the lovely and moderately difficult yellow trail . It's 10.5km long and has 260 to 370m elevation depending on direction of the loop you take . If you take it backwards from 10 to 1km it's far more difficult and hence an even greater challenge. If the conditions are right you will be treated with some wild life signing further adding to the breathe taking views and just the feeling of being in a little green heaven in the middle of our capital city.
Lovely serene safe place to hike or cycle among some wild animals. Hiking trails are good from beginner to advanced though tame hikers. Great place for family and group hikes or cycling, allowing you to finish off the day with some clean picnic areas for braaing and relaxing.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Amazing hiking trails, saw Zebras and antelopes. You should try the yellow route, you won't be disappointed, this is like the longest trail at Groenkloof, try having normal hiking boots as the trail gets a little bit steep and rocky as you get to the end.
This hike is NOT for the unfit! Amazing 11km it’s not 10.5km but it is really really REALLY tough. Try to start as early as possible, the heat is a killer. There’s a steep climb at the beginning and plenty ups and downs at the last 2km’s. I will attempt this hike again but only when I’m a lot fitter.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Very pleasant - can enjoy some open spaces, sunshine and fresh air. There's a choice of different length hikes we did a route of 4.7km . Like always with the outdoors, have the sunscreen and liquids on hand.
More clearer and directive signs would do. The map we received was faded, didn't help at all. Otherwise, its a great hiking place. Think twice before doing 10.5km. The first 2km and last 2km will make u wanna call SOS
Nice park, not too difficult to hike. Bring some water, there is not much shadow to hide from the sun. Could spot some nice animals there
My friend and I started our 2022 hiking journey with Groenkloof's 10km trail. Lush, beautiful views, Zebras and all. I've been here before, will definitely come again to explore the other trails.
