Incredible experience to witness Sakumzi, the owner and artist of the gallery together with his brother, explaining the township Motherwell and his project of art. He tells a lot of stories, all his paintings in the little cottage stand for something he experienced. A safe way for anybody to really visit a township in Southafrica. He is super friendly and kind.

Visiting the Hand in Hand Art Studio and the ensuing conversations and connection with Sukhumzi, Msindisi, and family and friends in the community created probably the most meaningful and powerful experiences of our month-long travel in South Africa. There is clearly a strong desire and movement to utilize the strengths of the community to create positive projects to benefit young people in the neighborhood of Motherwell. The creativity, passion, and heart of the artistic community, from visual art to music and more, is inspiring. In addition to the wonderful artwork itself, the greatest asset of the Hand in Hand Art Studio is the explanation of the meaning of the art, the tour of the community, and the conversation with Sakhumzi and other creative minds. Therefore I highly recommend contacting Sakhumzi beforehand to arrange a date and time for your visit. On a side note, we also learned how to make dumplings south african bread with Sahumzi's mother and we think it will become a staple food of ours back home. : Because of the personalized nature of the experience at Hand in Hand Art Studio, everyone's experience will be unique.
