VISITING THE CENTRE

Following an introductory presentation, day visitors are treated to an in-depth tour of the centre.

Departing on the hour, open safari vehicles with experienced guides move between the various enclosures, enabling participants to view cheetahs, wild dogs, lions, black-footed cats, african wild cats, ground hornbills, sable antelope and much more.

A popular stop en-route is the 'vulture restaurant', where you can watch the rare African vulture swoop down to feed on the carcass remains.

We had a wonderfull time. A experienced guide who really went out of his way to give us information. Thank you so much for this opportunity. The leopards and cheetahs are amazing. The environment for these animals are fitting for them. The Rhinos!! To see it is wonderfull. I would recommmend all schools to visit this special place!!!
I love these guys so much - they really are the real deal - such a great team of dedicated conservationists who are working really hard to save imperiled wildlife like cheetahs. We showed up without an appointment and they gave us a personal tour and took us round to see animals like African wild dogs and cheetahs in a safari vehicle. They are also helping the endangered ground hornbill. It was an awesome visit!! They are the best!! Keep up the good work HESC - wildlife is counting on great people like you. Thank you so much!
Amazing centre with great endangered species to see. One can noticed and neat the centre and facilities are, as well as dedication and knowledge from staff.
I was blown away with their guided tour. The guides themselves were lovely, in fact ALL the staff for wonderful. There is just a gentle and caring atmosphere. The animals seem very happy and content. Definitely worth a visit!
What a great experience! The two guides were very knowledgeable and went out of their way to accomodate both locals as well as the foreign guests. We were fortunate to see a female leopard roaming on the nabouring reserve as we approached the reception area.
Unique place to see some big five and being a part of an ecotourism journey. Must visit
Great experience! It is amaizing to see how passionate these people are about their animals and the fantastic work they are doing! We got to drive into a cheetah camp on an open vehicle, which was a thrilling experience! Also got to see the vultures being fed which is magnificent! The guide was informed and very friendly. The animals are in very good shape and cared for. Well worth the time and money spend.
It was an ok experience..didn't see much animals. Only saw some bucks, cheetahs, an ostrich, lions and a sheep..didn't get to see the rhinos. The ride was almost two hours very informative hpwever I was disappointed that I get to see more animal.. we were also lucky yo see vultures at the vultures restaurant. Our guide tried looking for the rhino but unfortunately we weren't lucky enough to see them. We had lunch before our ride at the deli. The service was fast and the food was nice. We paid R265 per person and we had to book in advance for the game drive.
As a potential visitor, you must be very clear about the purpose of this centre. As it's name indicates, it provides a safe haven for some endangered African wildlife species to live. I mention this because I overheard more than one party grumbling, having clearly visited under the misapprehension that would have a mini-safari experience. You do have the opportunity of taking a guided tour. This is as close to the safari experience as you will get at the venue... driven in open 4X4 vehicles and guided by khaki clad rangers. The guide that accompanied our small group was very personable and appeared knowledgeable. The tour itself covers a relatively small area. There are a number of endangered species King Cheetah, Rhino etc to be seen. However, since the nature of the centre is protection, they are all kept in penned off enclosures. As a photographer, this made it all but impossible to get images that contained no obvious man made elements. I'm not a bird person, however I was fascinated by the 'Vulture's Diner'. This is an area filled with bones and rotting carcasses. Open to the sky, it serves as a feeding point for local Vultures and otherbirds. The Centre is clearly focused on addressing a very real problem - the decimation of species in Africa. It succeeds as a place to 'introduce' the public to this issue and does so in chunks that are small enough to be easily absorbed. I was also very pleased to see that they did not use the graphic yet real imagery which is often used to reinforce this issue. Without doubt this decision costs them in terms of fewer spontaneous donations from visitors, however it does make for a much more family orientated experience. Would I go again? Probably.
Amazing facility. Friendly staff whom are extremely knowledgeable and provide educational information about the animals. It is very evident that the animals are well cared for and their well-being is the main interest of this well-run facility.
