The Hospital School Pretoria is a school for pregnant learners from grade 7 to 12, as well as mentally and physically ill learners from grade 1 to 12.
The Hospital School Pretoria is a bone fide school under jurisdiction of the Gauteng Department of Education. The school comprises of a primary and secondary school department in which tuition is offered through medium of English and Afrikaans to all learners in three main units. These units function on six different campuses:
The Hospital Unit in which tuition is offered to patient learners in the Pretoria Academic Hospital, the Tshwane District Hospital and Tshwane Rehabilitation Hospital as well as 1 Military and Pretoria West Hospitals. All school going patients receive tuition and especially cancer patients, children who have gone major heart surgery, of who have been involved in serious motor car or shooting accidents, or who suffer from a serious degree of burns and have to be absent from school for a long period of time, benefit.
The Psychiatric Unit which is based at the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital. Learners in grade 1 to 12 with psychiatric problems, amongst who are learners who attempted to commit suicide, rape victims and children who have been abused or molested, are taught here. In this unit we focus strongly on therapeutic tuition.
The Tuition Centre for Pregnant Learners is a high school in which girls from grade 7 to 12 are taught. The mission of this unit is to enable the girls to complete their school careers and so not to become a burden on society. We also endeavour to break the poverty spiral and to establish a change in lifestyle. Tragically, victims of rape and child abuse also form an increasingly large number of these learners.
Learners are admitted on a daily basis. The mainstream curriculum is followed. It is our mission to offer quality education and social upliftment to the disadvantaged and traumatised learner in the community and equip them to lead a useful life after their discharge.
Our mission is to provide quality educational opportunities for physically and mentally ill, as well as pregnant learners and to provide the necessary resources to maintain high educational standards. In order to realise our mission we commit ourselves to:
• Provide a well-managed school with a friendly and healthy learning environment.
• Empower learners by developing attitudes and values so that they have self-respect, respect for other people and the environment and are able to make wise, healthy choices in the future.
• Develop skills and competencies which will enable learners to participate in economic, political and social life.
• Develop the facilities offered by the school.
• Implement the curriculum.
• Develop staff skills.
