Irene Village Market

About

The 1st and last Saturday of every month! Come listen to live music, feed on lovely local produce and witness some lovely South African arts and crafts!

Description

Since the late 1980s, the Irene Village Market some 40 kilometres north of Joburg has earned wide acclaim both as a superb outdoor shopping venue and as a refreshing escape from the bustle of city life. Such is its acclaim, in fact, that it has been named ‘Best Market in Africa’ by Getaway magazine on numerous occasions.

The market, that is now held at The Big Red Barn, is a gathering of artists and patrons; crafters and collectors; home industries and connoisseurs from far and wide.

Indeed, its stated mission is ‘to provide a marketplace for the artist and home entrepreneur, a forum promoting art and craft.

This mission is taken extremely seriously, which explains why the market only convenes on the first and last Saturday of each month. Artists, it is felt, should not be pressured to mass-produce as this would unavoidably detract from quality.

A delightful market end and first Saturday of the month. From colourful leather shoes and dresses, to air dried vegetables, ceramics, paintings, jewellery, leather bags and much more along with a variety of food for all tastes. Combine the outing with painting at the Clay cafe.
Lovely vibe! There seem to be less vendors at the market than there used to be in the past. Hopefully this will pick up again soon! Would love a wider selection of food options too. Otherwise, a lovely outing to enjoy the outdoors. A huge plus is the gorgeous wisteria flowering in Springtime!
Large market. R10 parking fee, cash. Some stalls accept card. Many food stalls and lots of arts and crafts stalls. Could have more seating available in the food section of the market. Go-karts R150 for 10 min. Lots of things to do with the kids. Long wait at the roosterbrood stall. Jaffels were great at the other stall 2 @ R70.
Great little outdoor market with lovely Christmas gifts. Would definitely recommend it!
Great market, a bit of everything. Definitely need to get there early if you don't want to park too far or queue to get in. Can get pretty hot as the day progresses.
This has such an amazing family-friendly ambience, with a broad range of healthy and unhealthy snacks in a natural environment ... alongside an entire market of every nicknack your heart could desire. My recommendation: the schwarmas from Maria's Foods. Insanely healthy and made with care. Or the "plate of happiness" with all the barbeque you could want!
A very nice place with good food etc., however my vehicle was stolen there recently. Beware!!! My vehicle was parked opposite the security vehicle and the guy didn't see anything?!?! I called the security company to tell them what happened and they said the owners don't want to pay for more resources, and no further communication from them. This venue is therefore a serious target for vehicles to be stolen. Beware!!!
Lovely outing. Lots of different things to buy. Beautiful venue on a farm. Lots of physical things for children to play on such as a huge jumping castle, swinging from the trees on rubber bands and gliding from tree to tree. All can be viewed fron a restaurant called the Red Barn.
Wow what an amazing market. So much variety and so much to see. Will be back for sure.
This is a lovely place to spend your weekend. The market is quite big and venue offers a lot of great things to do such as hiking, MTB trails and an acrobranch. There is also a Ludwig Roses and a Ceramic Cafe where you can sit and paint ceramics while having some food and drinks.
