For those who love learning about history. This house perfectly symbolizes that. This house turn museum was built in Britain, then shipped to India and then finally to South Africa. During shipping, the house was dismantled into individual rooms and then shipped. It does not have a foundation. It has a lot of history behind it. It’s perfectly preserved and you’ll feel like you also lived with the Smut’s family. The books Jan Smuts used to read are there, his bedding, his uniform, the kitchen pantry, the living room, the bedrooms are perfectly preserved. You should budget more than an hour here as you be fascinated to learn about it. This place also doubles as place for a chilled date, as it has a restaurant here. Plus it has a hiking trail for nature lovers. Photos are not allowed to be taken indoors.
A lovely afternoon out. Really worth a visit. The tea and scones was delicious. The hike is worth exploring. It is pet friendly too. Remember to bring cash to pay R10 for entering for parking.
What an interesting insight into South African history. We visited the museum after a lovely hike up the koppie. Seeing the rather humble life of a previous statesman whether one sees him as controversial or not, was worth it. Loved the kitchen and study. Stunning spaces !
We went on the hiking trail with our pooches. They ask R10 per woof bit you are also welcome to donate towards the upkeep of the place. The trail, depending on the route you take can be an intense uphill with a nice gradual downhill or the other way round. Please make sure to take poop bags with you and you will need to take your own water an bowl with for the dogs. I would also recommend sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and takkies with very good grip. After our hike, we went to the restaurant on site, Tannie Isie. The most amazingly fresh scones!!!! A definite must have.
Such a lovely museum, if you like history or just curious about history, this is a place to visit. Definitely want to go back and take my time to read everything displayed in the house. Beautiful grounds, with a picnic area, bring your own or order from the resturant. They have a Doggy friendly, 2.3 km 'The Oubaas Trail' and you can get a breakfast for your furry friend next door @ Ouma Isie's resturant. Ouma Isie's is situated next door on the same grounds as the Jan Smuts House, not vegan friendly chips will have to do, but they do have a wine list
Took the dogs for a brunch and hike today. The Oubaas Trail is a 2.3km trail up and down Smuts Koppie. The venue is pet friendly as long as your dogs are kept on leash. Jan Smuts's former house is now a museum you can visit. Be sure to stop at Ouma Isie's Tea garden for a delicious Gin and Tonic.
The Oubaas trail that starts from the Smuts house is worth a visit. Well marked trail with rewarding views from the top. You can get in about a 3km hike here.Visited onWeekendReservation recommendedNo
A lovely Santa Paws event was hosted at The Smuts House. Everybody put in a lot of effort with their stalls. The organisers ensured safe parking and enough black bags and water bowls for the dogs. The tea garden has good affordable options. Grounds and trails are well kept. Good choice for a weekend outing.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The setting wat peaceful in the outdoors. The entrance fee is not so much but there is not much to do. We didn't visit the Smuts house, was not sure if it was opened or not because we stood at the door but nobody helped us. The food is good as well the service. Overall it was a good first experience.
Great vibe. Quiet. Wonderful for dog walks. Good food.
