Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

Description

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is a nature reserve of consisting of veld and koppies (hills) run by the Johannesburg City Parks and is located south of Johannesburg. Home to many species of flora and bird life, it is also home to large and small mammals such as blesbok, zebra, wildebeest and duiker. The reserve has a number of hikes and trails, archaeological sites with the Bloubos spruit flowing through the area.HistoryPrehistory saw the area inhabited by stone age man who hunted in the area with the location claimed to have the highest concentration of identified Iron Age sites on the Witwatersrand with the discovery of artefacts dating back 250,000 years. The Sotho-Tswana peoples would later settle in the area in the 1400s and would leave the location around 1800 when possibly climate changes and the movement of more militant tribes into the area saw their departure to Botswana. Their lifestyle consisted of animal husbandry and the growing millet, sorghum and later maize imported into Africa by the Portuguese traders.Around 1850, Voorttrekker Sarel Marais bought land on a western portion of the Rietvlei farm part of which is the reserve today, and used it for grazing and peach farming. His descendants would eventually sell the farm in 1914 to the Quilliam family who used it for dairy farming and as a piggery. By 1939, the Quilliam family had sold the land to the City of Johannesburg.

What a lovely experience. We took the yellow trail, although it was a bit of a challenge, we Absolutely loved it. I Highly recommend the hiking trails at Klipriviersberg nature reserve. If you want to test your fitness, go for the yellow trail.
Awesome experience, nice trails, quiet and for not even a second did I not feel safe... Big thumbs up Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Five stars for the very friendly and dependable staff, but four stars for the actual paths. It is a bit strange to see housing projects all around you almost all the time. Most tracks are rather short. If you want a really good workout, turn right at the entrance, go down about 1.5 Ks and follow the white track up to about 1100 elevation, and then you have an assortment of yellow, blue and red tracks to choose from. Not that many climbs though. If you're a serious hiker, go in early. It tends to get really busy from about 8:30. The location is also a favourite of joggers and cyclists.
I had an incredible experience hiking at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. This hidden gem of natural beauty exceeded my expectations in every way. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by friendly staff who provided me with helpful trail maps and valuable information about the reserve. The hiking trails at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve offer a perfect balance of scenic beauty and adventure. The well-maintained paths wind through diverse landscapes, including rolling hills, lush grasslands, and enchanting forests. The abundance of indigenous flora and fauna along the way made the hike truly captivating. What I loved most about this reserve is its peaceful ambiance. It’s a true sanctuary away from the bustling city, and the tranquility I experienced was truly refreshing. The absence of noise pollution and the gentle sounds of nature created a serene atmosphere, allowing me to connect with the environment on a deeper level. During my hike, I encountered various bird species, some of which I had never seen before. The birdwatching opportunities here are remarkable, and I highly recommend bringing binoculars to fully appreciate the diverse avian life. The breathtaking panoramic views from the higher points of the trail were an absolute highlight. I was rewarded with sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscapes, providing a sense of awe and a perfect backdrop for some stunning photographs. Additionally, the park facilities were well-maintained, including clean restrooms and picnic areas where visitors can relax and enjoy a packed lunch amidst nature’s embrace. Overall, my hike at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve was an exceptional experience. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply seeking a tranquil escape from city life, this reserve has something to offer everyone. I can’t wait to return and explore more of its beauty.
Nice tough hike... The Reserve is well kept, clean and serene. There were security guards at both entrances and also bumped into a couple of guards during my hike which gave me peace of mind.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

I had a really peaceful time hiking at this nature reserve. There are many different trails that you can take, depending on how far you want to hike. I saw pretty birds and a beautiful stream on my trail. It is quite a shady hike as well, so you won't easily get sunburnt. I would recommend going with somebody. Playground: There are no playground facilities that I saw Restrooms: I saw one rest room at the beginning of the trail and another at a different entrance. Picnic area: This is a lovely place to enjoy a picnic with friends and family
