Knysna Houseboat Myrtle holiday accommodation

About

Houseboat Myrtle is a self-contained cottage on the water. Anchored in the Knysna Lagoon, it's just a minute dinghy ride away from the Knysna Waterfront.

Description

Righto, fellow hearties, time to don the captain's cap and pull up the urban anchor, for here’s a getaway with a maritime twist. And what better place to find your sea legs than on the Knysna Lagoon? Never mind Thesen Island’s boring clapboard condo, or the Tuscan wonders at The Heads, if you want to feel nature and the spirit of adventure, then Houseboat Myrtle’s your baby. A wood-paneled houseboat anchored in front of the Knysna Waterfront, Myrtle is what we experts term a 'stationary houseboat' - she stays 'on anchor', as one would say. But this said, the old gal does come kitted with a small motor dingy to get you and the motley crew to and from the shoreline. Among the original Knysna houseboats, Myrtle is decked from top to bottom in a timber finish and sleeps four comfortably - comfort being a relative term, of course. There’s a main bedroom with Queen bed and another fold-out double bed in the lounge, while towards the 'aft' (back) you’ve got a small kitchen/'galley' with gas stove and fridge. As far as ablutions go, don’t fret, simply lean over the edge and… Just kidding. There will be no call to head to land and the nearest Caltex, 'cause Myrtle comes equipped with on-board loo and hot shower. The living area is a cozy setup with a dining table, paneled walls with navigation charts and comfy couches, where you can kick back and listen to the lapping water and approaching steamer. Goodness, there’s even a wood-burning stove to keep the socks dry during the winter months. On a good day the views are obviously lovely - the majestic Knysna Heads in one direction, the common landlubbers going about their urban chores in the other. Myrtle has two decks, both perfect spots to crack the chardonnay, open the Woolies salsa dip and gooi 'n line as the sun dips over the misty horizon. Skeptical? Well, in that case, check out the guest feedback rolling in like a wave off the coast of Phuket… “The perfect way to kick off our holiday after a long year. Relaxing on the deck with a book and good fishing was peaceful bliss!!” says a recent sailor groggy with delight. “We thoroughly enjoyed our stay," says another pirate from the UK. "We had a braai on the deck and the sunset views make for unforgettable memories. The dingy rides to and from shore on the choppy water can be quite thrilling." We bet they can be. Bottom line, Myrtle is either your thing or it ain't. If it is, you're gonna have a ton of fun!

We stayed here for two nights, and what an amazing nights they were! Being slowly turned around in our boat with changing views, and the waves singing us a lullaby as we slowly fell asleep, it was the deepest sleep I had in a while. We came to the location with a boat which we could use during our stay. While relaxing outside, I had the pleasure of playing with some friendly birds who quickly became my new little companions. It was a lovely experience to interact with these feathered friends in the midst of such a peaceful and serene setting. Not only was the boat spotlessly clean, but it also felt incredibly safe and secure. As someone who had never slept on a boat before, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and restful the experience was. I highly recommend this unique and unforgettable stay to anyone looking for something out of the ordinary. Thank you, Julia, for an unforgettable experience.
Had an incredible time staying here - something truly different and very memorable. To get from land to the boat, you make use of a little boat with a motor - lotsa fun. Once on the boat, you are welcomed into this homely, well decorated wooden cabin. The house is fully equipped, with everything that you'll need to enjoy your self - catered stay . It's off the grid, with a solar inverter system - so load shedding isn't a bother. The water system is well thought out with a gas geyser. The toilet is a PortaPotty, which takes some getting used to, but it's all part of the experience. The bedroom is comfortable and has plenty windows, which allows you to wake up to a lovely view of the lagoon if you choose to sleep with the curtains open. If you have kids, the dining room table folds down into a second bed. The bow and stern of the boat have little porches, which are lovely to sit on and enjoy the view, have coffee or go fishing from - one even has a built in braai place. We enjoyed our stay so much that we would literally plan a trip back to the area just to be able to stay here again...

While the weather wasn’t what we had hoped for we had a fabulous time watching the amazing lightening skies from the comfort and calmness that Myrtle provided. She is a real gem
I have stayed in far too many Hotels, B&B’s and resorts over my lifetime to be impressed by opulence alone, and rarely write a review if things are perfect. We pay good money and we expect them to be just that. Having just spent a couple of days on the houseboat “Myrtle” moored on the Knysna lagoon, this all changed for me and I felt compelled to share our experience specifically aimed at those who have never considered a holiday on the water. I started this review by listing the usual superlatives, romantic, stunning, superb, magnificent, and then realised that while “Myrtle” is all of these things, it still didn’t fully describe what we felt. I have settled on “Spectacularly different” The houseboat “Myrtle” is a registered Air B&B, making it in my book, singularly the most spectacularly different Air B&B in the country. We were greeted on the quayside by owner/operator Julie, an entrepreneurial young lady who quickly gave us a rundown on everything we needed to know to make our stay just perfect. She is an absolutely superb host. We piled our luggage into a rather nippy little dinghy and she expertly navigated us out to the houseboat, coming in from the rear, gunning the engine a little, immediately putting it into idle while she swung a sharp left turn which brought us gently sideways alongside the landing deck. This is one aspect I should have paid more attention to. Then she took us through the houseboat itself which wants for nothing. It is well appointed with every basic utensil and appliance that one could need or expect. It was then my turn to navigate Julie back to the opposite shore. She instructed me on a series of left and right turns and given that the entrance to the little harbour is about 75 meters wide I managed to steer into it expertly and surprisingly negotiated what might be regarded as a reasonable landing against the dock. I stalled for time hoping she would leave until it became apparent to me that she was going to stand there to witness my safe return to the houseboat. After a rather good reverse away from the dock I gingerly set off towards the houseboat. With what Julie did firmly stuck in my mind I approached the houseboat from the rear, gunned the motor, cut it and swung a sharp left far too early and missed the houseboat totally. Thus began a series of missed approaches, each one being greeted with hoots of laughter from Julie on the opposite shore. I eventually made it on my fifth approach to thunderous applause from Jules now trotting gleefully away. A most endearing young lady indeed. For those who have not experienced a sleep on a houseboat, put it on your “to do” list right away. I can only describe it as therapeutical. As we lay there in the dark with the door to the bedroom deck wide open, you become aware of the gentle swaying to and fro of the houseboat on the water. I imagine this wonderful sensation would put even an insomniac to sleep. But the best was yet to come. As I lay back on my pillow, I became aware that we were turning. Where I was looking towards the old railway bridge on the lagoon, suddenly and ever so slowly the hotels started coming into view as the houseboat started reacting to the turning of the tide. This was followed by the lights of the Waterfront and eventually the Knysna Heads in all its splendour. It reminded me of being in a revolving restaurant. This is where we stayed guaranteeing us a most wonderful sunrise from our bed. And so the whole process is repeated daily. In conclusion, an absolutely joyous stay. Highly, highly recommended. Thank you again Jules. Derek and Helena. Living in Knysna anyway, we will be back sooner than later. xx
So far awesome! Not catching much fish but relaxing like you won't believe.
We LOVED our experience on this gorgeous house boat. The views are incredible, and the interior is very thoughtfully arranged. The whole experience is unique and delightful, including the trip to and from the boat in the dinghy. The hammock adds a wonderful relaxing experience. Highly recommended!Rooms: 5/5
