Description

For those of us who put so much of ourselves into Le Canard, it was more than our work, it was our home. Following the sale of the Le Canard property, it has been very hard to live away from home.

We loved wining and dining our guests and feel so alienated without them. Throughout the years, many guests asked us to consider facilitating the Le Canard experience in their own homes. These guests were surprisingly right on the mark. Sophisticated home dining has become one of the most dominant means of entertaining in cities such as Paris, Milan, London and New York.

Le Canard cuisine is ideally suited to executive and fine dining and celebrations. Le Canard at Home now offers you the opportunity to enjoy six star dining experiences in your own home.

Freda Appelbaum, Le Canard’s patron and executive chef, understands that contemporary society is also geared to cultured casual dining. It is for this reason that she is now also offering a range of more casual dishes. Invite family and friends to enjoy Freda’s wonderful food in the comfort of your own home.

You will find Le Canard at Home at Jackson’s Food Market, which opened opposite its original store in Riverside Shopping Centre in Bryanston Drive in the last week of August 2016. For more information on Jacksons, visit their website, www.jacksonsrealfoodmarket.co.za, or call them on 011 463 1598.

Dining at Le Canard has become somewhat of a special occasion in my family. From my parent's 25th anniversary, to special birthdays and even my own wedding- it has been a safe bet for a superb culinary experience. I'm happy to say that despite the poor reviews below the food is still exquisite and the experience memorable. One area they seem to have slipped in is the caliber of their staff. They struggle to comprehend me and often need to go find a more senior waiter to answer questions. But the food is so lovely I can live with this.
Contrary to some of the opinions expressed previously, I have encountered only the best service and most outstanding culinary experience at Le Canard! I consider it a marvellous establishment, under the management of a no nonsense, superb restaurateur! This is certainly one of the best fine dining venues in Africa!
Having attended a few dinner functions at Le Canard in the past I decided to host a dinner for 15 of my friends during July 2013 as a special occasion. I have travelled extensively throughout the world during the last 30 years and I have experienced and appreciated many restaurants of fine quality and service. However, I can honestly say that in preparing for this particular event, I have never before been treated in such a disgraceful and insulting way as I was by the owner-manager, Freda Appelbaum, of this highly over-rated establishment. I had two face-to-face meetings with her a few days before the scheduled date in order to discuss and agree arrangements for a menu, wines and a private function room. The first meeting was reasonably cordial, and I was told that I could have any menu I wanted and she would cook it for me. We landed on a draft menu and I requested it to be emailed to me for further reflection prior to finalisation. This e-mail never arrived and I followed it up with a phone call whereupon I was rudely told it was final and had been sent. I arranged a second meeting at the restaurant and was inflicted with further rudeness, sarcasm and downright arrogance, even though I bent over backwards to be as polite and diplomatic as possible to compensate for her completely unacceptable and inexplicable behaviour… she was dealing with a customer! My alleged crimes included, as far as she was concerned, having the audacity to request a change in one of the starter selections and also to enquire very politely I might add about the table arrangements in terms of flowers and candles. In a very condescending tone I was asked if I wanted to do the menu myself as I seemed to have very specific ideas about what I wanted. Of course I had some ideas, as normally is the case with customers, but I also expected some constructive advice from a so-called expert. If it was not for the very short notice, I would have cancelled the booking immediately and selected another venue. I tried to calm her down and asked her to draw up the revised menu card and send it to me, which she reluctantly did. On checking the menu I found nine spelling mistakes and a very unprofessional layout which I politely brought to her attention. Imagine my horror when I discovered, on the evening of the dinner, that she had completely ignored my corrections and presented her original version… and had the cheek to charge me for it. She was equally rude and condescending that evening. Although the food and service from the staff were good, no amount of good food can compensate for disgraceful rudeness and arrogance from a restaurant owner. I will not be returning to Le Canard while it is still under its current ownership and shall be advising all my friends and colleagues not to do so either. There are plenty of other restaurants out there that value their customers and deserve support. Shocked and disgusted
Poor on all fronts - bad service, mediocre food, REALLY snotty maitre d' - when I informed him last Saturday night that several parties including my guests have been waiting for some time in the foyer to be seated, his response was "So? Everybody waits." Well, not me, not ever again at your restaurant. Even if the food was very good I would not have wanted to return. The food was uninviting, pedestrian and badly prepared. I cook far better duck breast at home than their "house speciality" - overcooked, stringy and dry duck. My recommendation: Definitely worth a detour to another restaurant!
Useless place...I had heard good reviews and tried making a reservation for dinner via web, contact form, tel...NO RESPONSE. Must be the universe telling me to stay away.
