Registered Clinical Psychologist with a special interest in Eating Disorders, Body Image, Anxiety, Self-Harm, Bullying and PTSD
I am a registered Clinical Psychologist. My academic training at Wits University and UNISA has provided me with diverse perspectives on psychotherapeutic interventions and insights into the nature of psychological struggles. I obtained my Master’s degree from UNISA where I was trained in family systems and Ecosystemic therapy, which I have applied to my work in both psychiatric and community psychology contexts.
I worked at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital where I gained experience working with adolescents. I completed both my internship and community service at Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital where I worked with adult acute psychiatric patients. I later became the primary psychologist at the Independent Living Unit- a programme aimed at facilitating the reintegration of patients into their communities. I have consulted at Crescent Clinic as a therapist on the general, young adolescent, eating disorders and drug rehabilitation programmes.
My private practice is based at Akeso in Parktown, Johannesburg. I work with individuals, families, children and adolescents across a broad range of psychological struggles. I am passionate about lecturing, research and writing and am a regular contributor to articles featured in Cosmopolitan and Women’s Health magazines. Since qualifying in 2009 I appeared regularly on SABC on the TV show 3Talk with Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu; where I was one of the resident psychologists. I have also appeared on eNCA.
I run school based programmes for parents, teachers and learners focused on areas such as bullying, self harm and eating disorders.
Treatment Philosophy
The decision to come to therapy, in itself represents a movement towards change.
I appreciate however, that a willingness to talk about our personal struggles often brings about feelings of vulnerability. I believe it is important to both understand the context in which an individual’s difficulties have arisen, but also to empower them with skills to generate more effective life choices.
This journey is composed of both increased insight and symptom relief.
Therapy teaches you that there is another way to be in this world. Sometimes we become so stuck in our own established patterns of existing that we forget how to live, be happy and successful, how to love and how to trust ourselves.
Therapy offers a non judgemental, confidential, safe space in which one is able to work through and find meaning in what is very often, overwhelming events, emotions or circumstances in one’s life.
