Lion's Head

Description

Lion's Head is a mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, between Table Mountain and Signal Hill. Lion's Head peaks at 669m above sea level. The peak forms part of a dramatic backdrop to the city of Cape Town and is part of the Table Mountain National Park.SurroundingThe suburbs of the city surround the peak and Signal Hill on almost all sides, but strict management by city authorities has kept development of housing off the higher ground. The area is significant to the Cape Malay community, who historically lived in the Bo-Kaap quarter close to Lion's Head. There are a number of historic graves and shrines (kramats) of Malay leaders on the lower slopes and on Signal Hill.HistoryIn the 17th century the peak was known as Leeuwen Kop by the Dutch, and Signal Hill was known as Leeuwen Staart, as the shape resembles a crouching lion or a sphinx. The English in the 17th Century called the peak Sugar Loaf.ActivitiesLion's Head is known for spectacular views over both the city and the Atlantic Seaboard, and the hour-long walk to the top is particularly popular during full moon. Its slopes are also a popular launching point for paragliders. Sunrise hikes offer a unique perspective over Cape Town

My second visit to Lions Head. Great South African ambience with a big screen for watching sports. Servers were on the ball and tried a few favourites. Biltong was fresh and delicious. Kalk Bay fish and chips hit the spot with the homemade peri peri sauce. The lamb bunny chow was a miss for the day, meat was a bit chewy, but full marks for spices. Good portion sizes and value for money.
I really wish I could give this place 5 stars but as long as they decide to not up their game, staff-wise, It will be a 4 star. Let's first talk about the positives, The food is delicious and really honours the South African Braai culture, the Biltong and boerewors are especially recommendable They also have some nice self brewed beer, and although they could have more choice I still really enjoyed them. Then the negatives, I would say the interior could be nicer, although this is more of an in between part of the rating. The real problem lies with the staff, or better said, the lack of any. When we were at the restaurant there was only 1 waiter. This is absolutely ridiculous as she was under an unfair amount of stress. Firstly, as she was alone service was slow. Secondly, the stress made her make many rookie mistakes like forgetting cutlery, forgetting our order or giving us the wrong beers. No hate towards this staff member as it really is the owners responsibility to hire more staff. The food thankfully did come out quickly, they probably do have enough chefs. Anyhow, this place could easily be 5 stars if they just get their staff situation under control. It must have been better in the past as this place has almost no bad feedback. I hope they can quickly get back to this level.
I always bring my friends and family here who come to visit me in Amsterdam. I was shown here by a former manager of mine who was constantly talking about watermelon beer, now I'm a Lion's head watermelon beer witness. Everyone should try the watermelon beer here, it is delicious. Food is never disappointing, with massive portions beautifully presented/plated. The owners run the place and are great people!
Great vibe, liked the decor, and the service was fantastic! Both waiters were very kind, friendly and helpful - service in general was good. Food portions were quite big in my opinion. The food was very flavourful and I really liked the spicy babotie samoosas, and the lamb bunny chow was pretty good as well. Prices were pretty average for Amsterdam at +-20 euros per main meal - we had bunny chows, peri peri chicken and the ribs for our group. Would recommend for a fun and relaxed lunch/dinner out!
A friend from Namibia took me to this place and I was very surprised to find such a super cool and tasty restaurant in de middle of De Pijp. A thousand times I passed in front of it but never noticed this place. What a shame! Mozambique style sour chicken and their craft beers are so gooood! Inside is very cozy for casual meetups and hangouts.
Great restaurant. The beers are interesting, all well balanced and have great flavour. The food is fantastic. Boerenworst was delicious. Pork knuckle beyond comprehension. We could not finish it with 3 people. And I always take nachos here! Lovely service
This is a really nice place if you want to have some drinks and snacks or also some good food. The buffalo wings were really great and the biltong too. The smashed burger was absolutely great: just juicy and simple as a burger should be. My partner had the chicken burger which was also good. Each come with a really generous portion of French fries. This place is definitely a new favorite spot.
Excellent food and a very chilled atmosphere. We had the ribs and the wors and both were excellent. There are also plenty of gluten free options on the menu. I would highly recommend!
Really delicious dinner and craft beer in Amsterdam! We went after our tour at Heineken and it was a great way to end the day! We got the samosas and Peri peri chicken which were both great! Would definitely come again.
I was so happy to see a South African restaurant with a menu I could recognize but wow, the place is pricey and the stick of droerwors was not good. However, if you are feeling homesick I would recommend popping in nonetheless.
