Lufuno Education for Life Home Based Care project was started after the identification of a need for HIV/AIDS support in Protea Glen, a Soweto location, that had no health clinics and little information on HIV/AIDS.
Lufuno Home Based Care (registered as Lufuno Education for Life Home Based Care Project with the department of Social Development) is a holistic services NGO. It is a sustainable organisation that aims to improve the living conditions of community members of Protea Glen and the surrounding areas.
Lufuno Education for Life Home Based Care Project started in 1998 and has been housed by the Roman Catholic Church (Isidore Bakanja) at Protea Glen. For 13 years the organization has grown from strength to strength. The staff has increased, from 10 caregivers when it started and to 45care givers currently. It's services have also expanded beyond Home Based Care to include feeding schemes, organic gardening, paralegal services and arts and culture amongst others.
Upon last counting (January 2012) the organisation supports 568 patients, 520 orphaned and vulnerable children and 150 senior citizens.
Lufuno's mission is to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS poverty to our communities through the following projects:
