As a Psychology Honours graduate, Marilyn C Saunders worked for the Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children as a Programme Manager for 5 years. During this time she received training and gained valuable experience working with children and adolescence. Marilyn C Saunders obtained her Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Pretoria. Since then she has been working for Ekupholeni Mental Health for 10 years in a Township in Germiston on a part-time basis for where she works with children, adolescence and adults while also gaining knowledge of the African culture. She is also working from her independent practice that is based in the heart of Midrand, Gauteng.
Marilyn C. Saunders views every individual as unique and does not treat her clients with a “one size fits all approach” She believes that even though clients may have similar problems their experience and the way they view their problem is different from others. Her therapeutic style can be described as fairly simple: She aims to be present and interactive with her clients throughout each session, discovering how they view themselves and identifying the difficulties that they want to resolve. She offers her time, knowledge and experience with her clients so that they may work through things together in a trusting and open relationship that can be challenging but also life-changing.
Therefore, she is a therapist who deals eclectically (different approaches) utilizing her therapeutic tools suited for a unique problem and focuses mainly on Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). She has obtained a Primary Practicum Certificate from the Albert Ellis Institute which is based in New York City.
REBT is an action-oriented psychotherapy that teaches individuals to identify, challenge, and replace their self-defeating beliefs with healthier ones that promote emotional well-being and goal achievement.
Over the years, she has worked in several different contexts with a broad range of clients. The clients that she has worked with include those who are experiencing problems with relationships, work and redundancy, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, bereavement and loss, divorce and sexual abuse/rape. She has also done group work with children who have been sexually abusing children and also children with sexual behavioural problems.
