Nizamiye Mosque

Description

Nizamiye Masjid, often called the Nizamiye Mosque, is a mosque situated in the city of Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. It is often stated to be the biggest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere, occupying less than two-thirds of a hectare in a 10 hectares of land. The plans for the mosque were originally designed in Turkey, but a South African architect adapted the design to South African building standards. Construction began in October 2009 and was completed in 2012.OriginAli Katircioglu, a Turkish businessman, planned to build Ottoman-styled architecture in places where it was absent. Failing to acquire a suitable location in the United States, the project was moved to South Africa. This move was advised by Fethullah Gulen.Work began on the project on 1 October 2009 and was officially inaugurated by the South African President Jacob Zuma on 4 October 2012. The name of the mosque was inspired by the 11th-century Nizamiye Madrasahs, a higher education institution system used in Baghdad and other parts of the Islamic world.Nizamiye complexThe Nizamiye Complex has several institutions besides the masjid and serves as a community center with its several halls and facilities.MasjidConstruction on Nizamiye Masjid began in October 2009 and was completed in 2012. The basic plan of the masjid was adopted from the 16th-century Ottoman Selimiye Mosque. This mosque, located in Edirne, Turkey, was designed by Mimar Sinan. I can’t even begin to describe the amount of peace you feel as soon as you step into this mosque, it’s truly something you need to experience for yourself. The architecture and artwork is absolutely breathtaking. You can’t literally sit there for hours just admiring events bit of detail
A place of prayer. This Turkish mosque took me back in time to our visit to the Blue Mosque in Turkey. The Architecture and Design always leaves me in awe.The peace and tranquility, a conversation with you and your creator. A walk through the Turkish Museum was quiet educational. Learn about the historical facts of the tourist attractions back in Turkey. Besides praying there are few sit in Turkish restaurants. Beautiful gem tucked away in Midrand Johannesburg.
Visiting the largest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere is an experience words cannot describe. People from all faiths and cultures are encouraged to visit and behold the beauty and serenity of this special place The mosque is situated in a complex that has a public clinic, school and restaurants for visitors to enjoy!
Beautiful views... Is so peaceful, friendly people & when you need a change of scenery, This is a go to place. Cover up is not nice being the odd one out but in case you forgot to bring a wrap you can buy one here overall is a beautiful place to be
Beautiful Architecture, Amazing mosque. Still it is my top first favourite mosque in South Africa. I miss this mosque and if Allah will i might be praying in this mosque again.
A very important and beautiful addition to the Johannesburg cityscape. This is I believe the largest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. Built on the model of the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. The architecture and the design are beautiful. The complex also has some interesting shops selling Turkish goods, restaurant and bakery. Their is High School and Clinic inside too. Would highly recommend a visit here. The people are very friendly and welcoming to people of other faiths.
Loved the bread! So fresh and soft... The main dishes were much to be desired though, was quite unimpressed with the presentation and overall taste. Turkish coffee was quite good.
Such a beautiful place. The architecture is incredible. Oh my the experience, it’s so surreal, and calming to the soul. You have to visit the mosque if you’re ever in Johannesburg. There’s also a gallery which has artifact pictures that are in Turkey
If like me, you enjoy venturing out and seeing new places and things to visit not just eating food but that always comes part and parcel to it, then this is another local place to go see. During COVID we decided to start visiting more local spots ie. eateries and other areas/landmarks. Life is short and that's one thing COVID has taught us, we can all go at any time so why put off what you can do today. We visited the Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand. The construction of the Masjid started in October 2009 and it was finished in 2012. The style and plan was adopted from the 16th-century Ottoman Selimiye Mosque, located in Edirne, Turkey, which was designed by a man named Mimar Sinan. All the ceramics are authentic Turkish ceramics that were imported and the rest of the decor was hand painted by calligraphy artists. The stained glass windows all 232 of them are absolutely stunning and bring such colour and light into the Mosque. Pre covid it could easily facilitate up to 6000 people per service, but now it accommodates alot less due to social distancing. The complex itself also has a school and a clinic, has a hall for weddings and other functions. They can host cooking classes, sewing classes and other events. A restaurant and bakery, and a few other smaller shops. The complex was also known for the multiple rose trees surrounding the entire complex and when in bloom made a gorgeous site to look at. All people from all walks of life are welcome. Please note when in the Mosque you will be required to remove your shoes before entering, and ladies are expected to cover their heads with a scarf, so you can bring your own. Masks to be worn at all times. Entrance is free, you can always give a donation towards helping the various communities they assist, and you can also take pictures inside the Mosque as long as no flash is used as well as in the gallery. If you get to meet Mr Behzat apologies if spelling is wrong he gives you such a good background to the Mosque and how the various religions interwine as well as alot of interesting facts from Turkey and how the Mosque was designed. It was such a good learning experience. So glad we finally ticked this off our list, and went to enjoy some Turkish food thereafter on the premises. #TheFoodMusketeer #TheFoodMusketeerTravels #TFMNizamiyeMosque #shotleft #Supportlocal
