Lovely people Synagogue Helpful people The photo shows a power shedding that happens quiet a lot in south Africa. Weird. A civilized country with not enough electricity
This is a very friendly and comfortable place to daven and learn. They have a few minyanim in the morning for shacharis, and a few at night for maariv; we appreciated the convenience. CHAZAK VEAMATZ!
Visited synagogue for the morning prayer service. Good number of guys who seemed friendly and a community you could slot into if from the area.
Great shul and Rabbis with convenient minyan times
Clean awesome venue
This review is directed at the Ohr Somayach Savoy, who unfortunately do not have their own google review. I do not have any problems with the Glenhazel congregation at all, and to the contrary have heard great things about them, but I am running out of places where I can lodge complaints regarding the conduct of their Savoy counterparts especially since any attempts to talk or reason with them directly seems to continuously fall on deaf ears. The Shul is situated in the heart of a suburban neighbourhood, and as luck would have it my family and I are direct neighbours with them. Every Saturday morning we are awoken by the loud screams of children who are not in shul but rather running around and playing soccer. They also seem to have constructed a small make shift soccer field so often, and I mean often, a ball is kicked over the wall and then we are subjected to the shrill screams of a child who is now hanging on the wall demanding that his ball be thrown back over. This is a nuisance I admit, but when it is happening every weekend it starts to feel like more than just a nuisance. When you are also unable to sleep in because the noise from next door is preventing you from doing so week after week due not to normal neighbourly activities but because your neighbour is running something else, and seems either oblivious, unconcerned or uncaring of the fact that he has neighbours it starts to make you feel angry. There were other problems regarding the children, they used to climb on the walls and tease our dogs, which was a line too far for me, and whenever it would happen I would march out there and deliver swift, stern and often loud justice, it would eventually stop, however, every now and then it might happen and I react when it does, though admittedly it isn't as bad as it was before. While these previous issues may seem somewhat lighter, and like I previously stated more nuisance based, even though what I would urge those reading to remember that this isn't a typical neighbour to neighbour conflict or relationship. The real problems have emerged once they built or commissioned a function hall and started hosting events. Now a few times a month or even a week, whether it be Barm Mitzvahs, Bat Mitzvah's or Weddings and on the odd occasion that have an event for one of the Jewish chaggim, events where they play blaring music well into the night. The most events I have counted them having a single week has been as high as three. What we need to understand is that this isn't just a neighbour having a party every once in a while playing music on their home music system, these are coordinated payed for events with hired DJs or Bands that have high grade and professional sound equipment which means first and foremost that their speakers aren't just good quality, but they are big and that they are loud. When the music plays doors and tables in my house vibrate from the bass. While they seem to be having fun there is zero consideration for those around them, the building or commission of these halls was never brought to us their neighbours for approval which is something that is required by law, so there's already something shady that seems afoot. My father addressed the other issues with the rabbi of the Soul a while ago regarding the fact hat it is unfair that we have to be subjected to this seeing that it is a suburban neighbourhood this is not only breaking the peace of it by trampling all over it, but it unfortunately didn't seem to make any difference. What I have found also is that function halls have to follow certain criteria in order to be used for those purposes, for example they need to be sufficiently sound proofed so that sound is deadened enough so that it doesn't travel out the hall, and for instance its needs to be situated a certain distance away from any boundary walls so that the sound that does say emit disperses over a longer distance, this is still in accordance with soundproofing. These are important criteria for Halls in Suburban areas, criteria Ohr Somayach does not fulfil and doesn't care to...
