This was the second time that we, pensionado couple from The Netherlands, hired a motorhome Standard 4 Berth from SA Roadtrippers. The instruction at the Cape Town office is very efficient, thanks to a video presentation. At collection a 45000 rand deposit was taken from our credit-card. In previous years we hired a similar vehicle from Maui and although they might be a bit cheaper, the quality and equipment coming with the SA Roadtrippers motorhome was superior in many ways such as a larger high quality master-bed, larger refrigerator 110 versus 80 liters, one large water tank for toilet, bathroom and kitchen instead of a separate tank for the toilet, automatic gears and cruise control, a portable access step and much larger storage room due to the higher position of the master bed. We traveled up the West Coast, South Coast and Garden Route area for six weeks after the South African summer holidays had ended mid-January and enjoyed many empty on weekdays campsites that are scattered throughout the country. During this time, we only had a small problem with a leaking hot water pipe, which was resolved on site, the same day, by one of the technicians from the Cape Town office. We used our own TomTom Go 5200 as a navigation system, which includes a speeding alert and prevents getting traffic fines. Return of the motorhome also went smoothly and no problems were encountered concerning the refund of the deposit from our credit-card within 30 working days, although we did lose some money due to the stronger position of the rand against the euro. We hope to come back next season.
What a stunning holiday. The Western Cape is gorgeous, and we found the most beautifully tranquil, empty campsites, wonderfully hidden from anything but 360 views. The camper itself was our perfect companion. The right size, the right steadiness on uneven roads, excellently stocked with all the camping essentials, clean, and practical. When we picked it up, the handover was thorough and 100% welcoming. When dropping it back the service was more than professional, it was genuinely kind and caring. I'd go back with SA Roadtrippers in a heartbeat.
What a wonderful experience this has been! We rented a 4x4 Double Cap with rooftop tents for over 3 weeks to travel SA, Namibia and Botswana. On arrival at the airport we were picked up by Werner in our vehicle. We then drove to the the SA Roadtrippers office to do the paperwork, inventory check and instructions. Werner and Amy took great care during this process, making sure everything was perfect and clear, and providing us with with all the necessary information about the vehicle and gear. They even helped us finding our first campsite for the day. The vehicle Ford Ranger and gear itself were in perfect condition and really well thought-out. The tents are comfortable and easy to pitch gets easier every day!. It has a great kitchen with everything you need, and includes really nice extra's like a fridge, heavy cast iron pan, braai grid, large gas stove and much more. The vehicle is also equipped with everything you need for off-road driving, like a build-in air compressor, high lift jack, spare tires, etc. Thanks Amy and Werner for this great experience!
Great place to hire campers. Excellent prices, friendly staff, well maintained vehicles. Had a blast! Thanks
What the local staff say and what you will agree on when you pick up the car does not necessarily match with what the people in the office in Cape Town do after leaving the car. At the pick up of the car BEFORE we signed the contract we specifically asked what happens if we get a puncture or a crack in the windscreen because it is not clearly formulated in the contract. We were informed that punctures are being repaired and that repaired tires are used but that with our chosen insurance Standard we have to pay for repairs ourselves. Same with glass cracks. We got a puncture on our last day and agreed with the local staff that the tire would be repaired after we returned the car and that it would cost us around 120-150ZAR. When we came home to Sweden we notice that people at the Cape Town headquarters have taken much more money from our credit card, the cost of a brand new tire. When we email to say that the local staff already told us that the tire would be repaired, they suddenly claim that there is a policy of never using repaired tires. This policy is not in the contract we signed, we did not get any information about it, even though we asked we got completely other info, apparently repaired tires are being used. Our car was very new 1-2 years and nice and there was good equipment in it. However, the tires were worn, if we would have known what we know today we would never have accepted them. Tip: check the tires carefully and do not accept worn tires, you will need very good tires! Also be prepared that they may try to charge some extra fee when picking up the car that is not included in the contract you receive before. With us, they tried to add an extra cleaning fee to our credit card before we even got the car. Fortunately, we had ALL the paper with us and we could prove it was wrong. They didn't take our money for this, thanks.
Great and perfectly maintained car, thoughtfully equipped for camping, airport pick-up, very helpful instruction to the car and equipment.
Simply outstanding. SA Roadtrippers allowed my young family to enjoy a magnificent holiday across South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. My children loved the experience and the camper was superb. Exceptional mpg, comfort and reliability. Experts who we met along our journey were amazed by the price and vehicle quality. I cannot recommend this firm enough and my husband and three children are already looking forward to returning for a new adventure. Thank you SA Roadtrippers for such a wonderful service.
An all-round excellent experience. These guys take their vehicles, your safety and your enjoyment very seriously. You can rest assured the vehicle is going to be in excellent condition with crisp bedding, clean everything and fully inspected. They show you everything, from simple things like how to open the fridge to complex things like how to work the hot water. Nothing is taken for granted and you're left fully confident. The extras are there too: a bike rack, camping chairs and tables. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and had to pry the kids out of the van at the end.
Pay attention - they RIP YOU OFF after you return home! Persist on a receipt when returning your camper or they will charge you random damages after! Everything started well. SA Roadtrippers picked us up at the airport and after signing tons of paperwork we received our campers. We had a wonderful journey through South Africa. The hot water and the gas burner wasn't working first disappointment. One camper had very low but still legal tire profile second disappointment , so we had to skip most dirt roads for security reasons. When returning the Campers in Cape Town everything went really quick! Two persons checked our campers for damages and wanted to bring us to the airport right after. I was really surprised that we didn't got a receipt or had to do any paperwork we had to sign around 20 papers at pickup. I needed to ask multiple times what happens to our 45'000 ZAR deposit for each camper and it felt like they didn't wanted to talk about that and just bring us to the airport quickly. They told us there are no damages and we will get a full refund - they only had to wait for traffic fines. The big mistake: I accidentally trusted Chey de Wet Manager and didn't consisted on a receipt that everything is fine. After a few weeks at home and multiple emails without an answer we started to worry about our deposit of 90'000 ZAR. Over three weeks after Drop-off we received a partial refund still 46'000 ZAR missing. Multiple emails and 2 weeks later later, we received another refund still 6000 ZAR missing. Until now, we never heard anything about not getting the full refund! I needed to ask WHY we didn't received the full deposit, and I got a short email telling me they charged us multiple damages and traffic fines - WTF? Sure im willing to pay damages, traffic fines our fault or "missing equipment" we lost one wine glass and an egg-lifter as we told them on return BUT you can't tell me "everything is fine - no damage" and charge me over 4000 ZAR after for damages like one? new tire. Im still not sure what damages they charged us. SA Roadtrippers told me in one email we "cracked the windscreen" in the other email they talk about a "damaged fly screen". SA Roadtrippers stopped answering my emails. I never received pictures of the damages as requested. Camping in South Africa is beautiful, but choose your camper rental wisely! Update: After adding my review SA Roadtrippers offered me to refund the missing deposit. After they told me I need to sign a "settlement" agreement hush-money? and remove all my comments. They tried to buy my silence? NO WAY!
I rented a six-people camper early April 2018. It was the first time we ever did this kind of vacation and were a bit anxious about the process. We went for SA Roadtrippers because of the stated quality of the vehicles and we were no disappointed. The vehicle was new and well equipped. It was clean, had good mattresses, camping tables, chairs and overall it was really comfortable. I would recommend adding a microwaveable dish though as it was lacking. The booking process was easy. Communication was good and clear. The price was a bit more expensive than other companies, but I think the service was worth it. They also picked us up and dropped us off and we were able to store some luggage at their office during our trip. We were given good instructions and information about our destination, which was helpful. The orientation session was helpful and not too long. Return was uneventful. Overall a great experience. The only thing that was a bit annoying is the way the deposit is processed. I was charged ZAR 10'000 as deposit and refunded the same amount in local current. Somehow, I lost money in the process as when I compared with my bank statement, I was charged USD 848.5 initially versus USD 789.3 that was returned to me. I know it is not my bank that charged fees I am certain of that, so the way they process it on their end adds charges or fees. Keep this in mind in the total cost, unless they change it to run your card as a “deposit” and not a charge and refund. Overall, I would probably rent with them again with them if needed. Edit. It is not a microwave that is missing, it is a dish that would go in the microwave. Edit 2. The issue is not that currencies fluctuate so much over 1-2 weeks, the issue is that the bank is applying a different exchange rate when you buy or sell a currency. This is why it is problematic if you charge the 10'000 and then refund it. These are two different transactions with a different exchange rate because of the buy/sell difference. It would be mush better to place a "hold" on the amount and only process it if you have to deduct something. You are penalizing your customers for nothing and hence the negative reviews....
