This was such a wonderful experience for both adults and children. We were given a tour by Barry and he was so great at explaining everything. We were taken through videos first about how planes are made and got to watch its final landing at the museum. The kids are allowed to 'fly' a small plane which was real fun for them it's grounded on the floor no real flying involved. The entrance fee was R25 for kids and R40 for adults so it's quite affordable for the experience involved. Give yourself about 3 hours to be here. It's quite a nice day out
Fantastic for kids. There is also snacks and food for sale, at very reasonable rates. It is open and you may need to consider the weather before heading out. Loads of fun and great value for money to teach kids about aviation in SA. Very passionate committee members, even taught my group some history on the aircraft, while we roamed around.
We initially went for the kids, but we probably enjoyed it more than they did! Our guide, captain Michael Blackburn, was the quintessential guide: knowledgeable, funny, entertaining and everything else you'd want in a guide. He knew just how to keep the adults and kids hooked throughout the tour. Highly recommend it
Fascinating tour given by Michael. He worked as an Air Steward for 40 years and has amusing recollections of occurences on board. He also tended to Mandela and Zelda in First Class. View the Boeing 747 that buzzed the Rugby World Cup at Ellis Park in 1995. Simulations of fire drill, emergency procedures and evacuation. View the oft mentioned black boxes. The kids can sit in a small Piper airplane and pretend to fly it or go and view the cockpit and simulation room for trainee pilots. The museum area next to the ticket office is curated by a very knowledgeable and passionate staff member too. So much more to see. So if you have ever flown as a passenger or wish to or are an air enthusiast this is not to be missed. I intend to return. Loved it!
An excellent civil aviation museum experience. Very informative and interesting to learn the history of the various ex airline planes. Especially the original Boeing 747 200 "Lebombo" and being able to go inside a classic Jumbo jet. Helpful and kind tour guides. Highly recommend it for a family day out.
Amazing place for a short outing on a bright day. There are a lot of types on airplanes including a legendary 747. In which you can also go inside and see the airplane. Entry fees are only 50Rands. I would like to rate it 4/5. You can grab some food and drinks also on the way to the museum and after that maybe you can chill near the germiston lake.
What an AMAZING experience!!!! Very friendly and helpful staff. Lots of airplanes to see. You can even take a walk inside some of the planes!!! Would recommend this to anyone, especially you have toddlers who love planes.
It was a lovely day at at the the place, with the General Aviation Aircraft landing right beside us, Generally a lovely time. Also got some special access with a tour guide, where you aren’t normally allowed to go. Because the tour guide saw I was an Avgeek, he showed me the inside of the DC-4. Did you know that DC-4 is the one from the crown and the first plane to land at or Tambo? I was also surprised at some of the rare aircraft they had, the 747 SP, 737-200, the Lockheed Consolation, and this they managed to land the 747 on the rand runway. Get ally lovely time, will return.
The museum is so well kept considering it is not funded. The staff, especially Margret and Margo were so friendly. We could feel the pride they had and thier experience was so incredible. It would be nice to see the cockpits better but understand that the aircrafts are still considered live. Its such a nice educational trip. Please do support them
What an awesome afternoon cleaning our vintage aircraft with a group of well behaved, polite learners from Pretoria Boys High. The boys were a pleasure to have on site at the SAA Museum Society located at Rand Airport and the resulting shining aircraft are something to visit and observe !! Well done to Pretoria Boys High, your school can be proud of your amazing manners, respect and eagerness to help with the upkeep of our valuable assets. Thank you for the hard work. Visit the museum, really worth a trip. Thumbs up for Pretoria Boys High !!!!
