Tankwa Karoo National Park

Description

Tankwa Karoo National Park is a national park in South Africa. The park lies about 70 km due west of Sutherland near the border of the Northern Cape and Western Cape, in one of the most arid regions of South Africa, with areas receiving less than 100 mm of average annual precipitation, moisture-bearing clouds from the Atlantic Ocean being largely stopped by the Cederberg mountains. Other low areas receive little more, as the Roodewerf station (coordinates: S32°14’27.9” E20°05’44.5”) with 180 mm of mean annual rainfall. In the hottest areas of the park, the mean maximum temperature in January is 38.9 °C, and in July the mean minimum temperature ranges from about 5 to 7 °C. Before this Park's proclamation, the only protected area of Succulent Karoo was the 2 square kilometre patch of the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve. Succulent Karoo has, together with the Cape Floral Kingdom, been declared a Biodiversity Hotspot by Conservation International.Tankwa's area has been increased from an initial 260 to 1436 km2. It is bounded on the east by the Roggeveld Mountains, on the west by the Cederberg, to the north by the Kouebokkeveld Mountains and on the south by the scattered foothills of the Koedoesberge and Klein Roggeveld Mountains, and the Tankwa River. The park's headquarters are located at Roodewerf (GPS coordinates: S 32° 14’ 27.9” E 20° 5’ 44.5”). Distances from the nearest towns to the park's headquarters are: Ceres (180 km), Sutherland (120 km), Calvinia (110 km) and Middelpos (52 km).

What an amazing experience, the vast open plains and stars are amazing at night. My 1st visit to the Tankwa and most definitely not my last. God willing I will be back!
What a brilliant experience. Each day, we had the pleasure to experience the Tankwa in a different way. We had wild camping days with beautiful vistas, and then other days, the comfort and treat of a clean bathroom and kitchen. Lots of springbuck, eland, zebra, gemsbok and jackals were seen. 4x4 routes were challenging, but not in such a way that you will damage your vehicle. Great fun thank you.
Fantastic accommodation at Elandsberg rest camp. Stunning stark scenery. But roads very corrugated. Heavy going unless you have the correct vehicle.
A unique experience best enjoyed with a capable vehicle with high road clearance and a extra spare tyre. The wide open spaces , the mountains the unique vegetarian brings you back to connect with your human fragility. This is brutalist beautiful nature at is best.
We camped in the Langkloof which was splendid the scenery was beautiful. We went on the road with our off-road trailer. The campsite is what we have expected and the private ablution is clean and spacious. The only drawback is the road to the campsite this need some upgrade. It is 15km from the reception to the campsite it it will take you between 1hour to 1hour 30 minutes. We could not explore the parh due to the road condition thos will only be possible if you enjoy 4x4 challenges.
We stayed at Elandsberg Camp and it is the best San Parks accommodation by a long way. Super quiet, very private and well equipped. It's a tough drive in and out but worth it....
A beautiful barren wilderness, where the solitude and tranquility almost has a personality! Much needed after a bone-jarring journey over roads that need maintenance after flood damage earlier in 2023. We stayed outside the official park due to a lack of accommodation availability on a very busy long weekend, and still hardly saw anyone! The SANPark reception, which we called in on, was well-maintained. We did not visit any of the accommodations or campsites.
Incredibly beautiful Karoo park. Was very wet after the rains and we crossed several rivers. Lovely stay in isolated Paulshoek cottage. The Gannaga pass is stunning.
This park is quite amazing. You want space - its there in abundance, you want views - some of the best I have seen, you want animals - plenty of those around as well, clean fresh accommodation - check. The winner though was the stars, it feels like the heavens are pressing down on you, breathtaking and without a light in sight. The only down side is the quality of the main roads. The corrigations have corrigations.
We are regular campers to Tankwa Karoo National Park but this time we thought we will stay in one of the Elandsberg cottages - always lovely to be in a place totally off the grid and no celphone signal that is why we go there because the wind is the noise and the breathe you breathe SILENCE is DEAFENING we love it. BUT 2 DOWNERS"NEGATIVES" WHY put a TV in a off- grid cottage - that's the whole point is to go there to read, play games talk to one another = which we did but for other people and a microwave!! This can't be called off the grid. Rather say No Celphone signal. 4 years a go we stayed in 1 of these Cottages and their was no tv's.. Other than that we had a lovely time and they have a cosy indoor fire place which is handy for the cold winter nights and oh the glorious indoor out door shower - one with nature, there is a solar fridge Freezer and a gas geyser and stove top.. NB!! to others who don't know - 2 people use x2 [5lt drinking water] if you more people take more water.. the water is brak = salty.. i hope this was helpful
