Mission

The Capstone School Ethos
Self-esteem
At The Capstone School low student-teacher ratios ensure that the individual needs of each child is recognized and nurtured. Our children, teachers and administrators share a bond of acceptance, respect, and trust. Priority is given to the emotional needs and self-esteem of our children. We encourage children to work and play together in a peaceful, caring group. Our children learn how to be good friends.

Values
Our teaching is achored in a loving, Christian centered approach we desire for our own children. Each family enrolled in The Capstone School receives our complete attention from the child's first day in the Pre-Primary to graduation from the Primary Phase.

Curriculum
We follow the National Curriculum with a Reggio Emilia inspired teaching philosophy. Within the Reggio Emilia approach, teachers create environments that invite the children to undertake extended exploration and problem solving, often in small groups, where cooperation and debate mingle pleasurably.

Analytical
In keeping with the Reggio Emilia Philosophy, teachers are co- learners and collaborators alongside the child. Each child is perceived as someone filled with potential, competent and capable of building their own theories. In all our endeavours, children are encouraged to observe, to question and to think deeply.

Individualised
Children progress at an individualized pace and are assessed on a continuous basis in a non-intrusive manner. Teachers keep records of each child's progress and meet with the parents regularly throughout the year to discuss their child's growth and needs. Emphasis is always placed on maximizing each child's potential and encouraging the child to discover creative ways to engage with all aspects of the environment.

Integrity
Pupils, teachers and staff all live by a system of shared values, rather than one of restrictive rules. Our disciplinary techniques include prevention, modifying the environment, substituting activities and redirection. Teachers assist children to express their feelings and talk through their difficulties and solving problems.

Warmth
Welcome to The Capstone School and the warmth that it embraces.

A great school and wonderful teachers! My boy has attended since grade 1 in 2021 and the learning experience has been so positive. He loves going to school
I have both of my children at Capstone and they are so happy there. We have moved from a mainstream school, and they are loving the smaller classes and more one on one attention they receive from their class teachers and principal.
In a country that has normalized monetizing education it is a challenge to find a school which is regularly reinjecting some of its profit into its facilities, ethic, educational material and most valuably, its educational capital : the teachers. This is what differentiates playschool and daycare. On my first visit I was pleased with the homely feeling and large open garden. When 2 large umbrellas blew in the wind and wiped out a toddler, I told myself this could have happened at a friends home. So I enrolled my toddler, because I thought there would be a benefit from the English as a first language as we already used a second language at home. On the first day I discovered that the playschool was using an adult bathroom upstairs for teachers and and an adult size bathroom for kids downstairs. I soon realized that my child would not be able to properly use the toilet and wash hands independently and would permanently require adult assistance to hold her to the sink height and toilet height. I was insured by teacher Sam that as all toddler grow 1m longer they would inevitably 5 years later have to use adult size bathroom... Within the same week the school announced that the gate code had been changed only to be used by teachers as children had been able to open the gate told me the principal of both pre and primary school which has direct access to the parking. The sign on the gates "keep closed at all time" on the pre primary side are unfortunately ignored by the choral class and children tall enough of the primary school, which happens every morning, above the toddlers classroom, before going back to the primary campus... This gives toddler direct access to the parking at drop off hours. My todler being able to bike and walk home with the only hope a car guard would stop her was quite a worry so I was happy the practice was pro actively changed for the code to be only used by teachers. One morning, after arriving and taking my toddler to the bathroom, as I knew she would need help, and after knocking on the door in the presence of the teacher we found a boy and a girl coming out. The teacher did remind them that only daddy and mumy or teacher should be in with a child. I left my kid and shortly after decided to book an appointment with the principal. I had to message the teacher during working hours as I was unable to get hold of the principal on the phone. After hearing my story on the sofa in the therapy room of the pre primary campus the principal told me that, what she clearly understood, is that if the esthétique was important for me, I would never be happy here and that she would not fulfill my demand to redesign a bathroom as the cost would be too high to allow both a pre teens and a toddler extension. When I highlighted that the topics mentioned were about toddler, adults, pre teens, health even more in in time of covid and winter safety issues the school should be preventing at all cost she answered that her latest investment was the plastic grass she covered the playground ground off 2 years ago and as it was worth thousands of rands she did not have anymore budget this year. I did point out the fact that the storage room where my child had been invited to store her bike during class was a maintenance storage were freshly used paints and paint rolls with solvents like varnishes were fuming should be locked out of toddlers reach. I hope this was done. We both agreed to part ways. When I asked to be reimbursed a fair share of the 4500R please note this is a playschool charging fees for art materials for 20 days of morning daycares including weekends, I was told that I should be glad not being charge a full term and admin registration fees of a form I did not sign. May my expensive mistake be your lesson.
