Completed my eye strabismus surgery with them back in March and everything turned out perfect. My eye has been completely fixed and I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out. I was able to set an appointment for a surgery within 6 weeks after my first appointment with Dr. Grendahl.
Denali Care Kiddos beware!!! Doctor scared me with "glasses right now or surgery". I took the prescription immediately to get the ball rolling since I was told it's a "process" getting things approved with Medicaid. Yeah sure I get it.. 2.5 months later I call Medicaid to see what the hold up is because it's preventative and if she doesn't have them she may need surgery per this Doctor. Medicaid's response was politely put they have reached out to the Doctor requesting additional information since she never provided a reason for the prescription to begin with and no response has been provided. How can you neglect to communicate an urgent issue and just let it sit with no follow up? My only guess is they're planning a surgery! I am disgusted with this place and will not be bringing my Daughter back. I have zero confidence they even got her second prescription right to aide their agenda. I will be telling her Pediatrician who referred us as well to be sure he is aware for future referals. If my Daughter in fact needs surgery, advised by a new Doctor, for these delays you can bet this won't be last from me.
They keep canceling my appointments the day of. I have been waiting to be seen since June. This is really inconvenient because I have to request time out of work to make this appointment. They canceled my appointment last minute again today and they don’t know when I will be seen and have not offered me to see a different doctor if one is available. Really frustrating. I was told they would call me to schedule another appointment and it has been another 2 months. Pretty sure I am going to give up getting in at this point.
Dr Winkle is the guy to go to if your kid has a stick in their eye. for sure. However, he has only completed like a week of optics training in his career, so can't find his way out of a paper bag where optometry is concerned. We saw him several times for a vision issue and finally gave up once he said 'there's nothing that can be done, his/her vision is what it is'... And then we just went to a normal optometrist who simply prescribed a prescription for a mild astigmatism. Problem solved. We wasted months, paid for appointments with ACES, prescription glasses that were incorrect, and even trialed dilating eye drops. All because he shouldn't be playing optometrist. And, apparently, he IS KNOWN FOR THIS. Why they let him play in the office with kids vision is a mystery to me. He should only be scheduled to help surgical patients, not vision appointments. Apparently every optometrist & ophthalmologist in the state knows he's a good surgeon but also a goober where corrective vision is concerned. His office knows it and still they allow unsuspecting parents to book him appointments for his victims. GRRR!!! It's negligent and abusive.
My 8 year old daughter recently had eye surgery with Dr. Winkle to correct double vision crossed eyes that she was having issues with. After a few visits, they determined that surgery was the only option to correct her vision. We are so THANKFUL she had the surgery done. It was quick and she bounced back to normal the next day! She is happier, more confident and like a new kid after her surgery! Everyone at the surgery center was amazing as well. Dr. Winkle made her comfortable at each visit and was very thorough! We were seen quickly and all of our questions answered in the office and over the phone. So happy to have been referred to this office!
Always running so late. They do not care about your time/ you it’s so frustrating. Took time off work to bring my kid in to sit 30+ mins waiting Edit: ended up waiting an hour just to be seen for 10 mins and felt rushed out. Sad this is my only option.
Dr. Winkle has been such a blessing to our family. My son had been to so many doctors for an eye condition that no one seemed to know what was wrong. We were feeling so hopeless until we found Dr.Winkle. He knew exactly the diagnosis when he saw my son and immediately treated with the correct medications that no other doctor could figure out. He took special care and kept my son's eyes from more permanent damage that would have made him totally blurred the rest of his life. Dr. Winkle gave my son a better future and we are so thankful everyday we found such a great Doctor.
AMAZING!! First I called to make an appointment for my son. I printed the new patient forms and faxed them back. I received a reminder call the day before the appointment. Wonderful so far so good. Then I got there. I was greeted right away even though the receptionist was with another patient. Instead of me waiting another lady came from the back within a minute and proceeded to check us in. We waited in the lobby that had children's toys for maybe 15 minutes. When we were called back the Dr.'s nurse was extremely polite and knowledgeable, there were toys to keep my son entertained. The methods she used to check his eyes were GREAT!! When Dr. Robin Grendahl came in she was patient and really LISTENED to what I had to say. She knew what questions to ask so that she understood exactly what his problem was and sheexplained everything in detail so I understood what was going on. The eye exam she gave was very thorough. My son had to have his eyes dilated. We waited in the lobby for 30 minutes to let the drops settle. They were on time in calling us back after the 30 minutes. Dr. Grendahl examined him again and explained he would need glasses which she wrote a prescription for that I was able to get filled down stairs and she even gave me suggestions for my fiance after reviewing our medical history. OVERALL this was a GREAT experience and I would recommend ACES to EVERYONE
Dr. Arnold and staff were very professional and kind. Dr. Arnold was great with our daughter, told us exactly what to expect, and our daughter had great results from the surgery he performed. I highly recommend him.
Alaska Children's EYE & Strabismus exemplifies many of the problems that vex our health care system in the United States. 1. Deceptive/Incoherent billing: They don't work with certain insurance companies but will fail to disclose this before scheduling an appointment or performing service. 2. Exorbitant pricing: A cursory survey of pricing around Anchorage reveals that there are wildly differing prices for the same services. This office is one of the most expensive but they don't do anything different than anyone else. Rather, they have certain types of professionals there who may or may not be involved with your service but the very fact that they work there inflates prices. 3. Charges without consent: This office placed a $97.00 charge on my bill and claimed it was part of a different service. No consent was given to any other services. It's time the public held medical professionals to account for their shady business practices. There are plenty of other places in Anchorage to visit. Do not give them your business.
