We love Ample Hills Creamery, one of our ice cream places in NYC. We ordered The Munchies Ice Cream flavor made with pretzel-infused ice cream. Their ice cream reminds us of Ben & Jerries but they have more mix-ins and taste fresher. For example, the Munchies mix-ins are with Ritz crackers, potato chips, pretzels, and crushed M&M’s. We are glad to also see them in stores!
Everything I thought I knew about how good ice cream could be changed when I had a sample of Ample Hills ice cream. I first tasted the Oatmeal Lace and it was amazing. Then I tried the Snap, Mallow, Pop and it was even more amazing. But when I tried Ooey Gooey, I was over the moon and decided that I had a new ice cream spot. Their employees were great about letting me try any and every flavor that I wanted despite the ever expanding line I really appreciate that. And just when I thought they couldn't get any better, I found out that they have a location in Jersey. Woohoo!!
THE RICE KRISPY TREAT FLAVOR!! I had to get another scoop before I left NYC. They have gluten-free cones, which is a high plus. I loved the unique flavors.
Really delicious ice cream and some unique options. My kids enjoyed seeing the factory through the windows and the crawl space and scent flavor station the most. Not as much to do as I originally thought but it was a fun trip for ice cream!
Got the butter cake and mango sorbet flavor. The ooey gooey butter cake is so tasty, mango was almost as good
I tried Ample Hills a few years ago and got a cookie batter vanilla flavor. It was amazingly delicious and out of this world. Recently, I went back and got a scoop of a peanut butter flavor they had on hand. It wasn’t that great. The ice cream tasted grainy and the flavor wasn’t anything special. I am not sure if the recipes have changed over the years or I just got a bad batch of ice cream this time. It’s sad they aren’t as good as they used to be.
This was a pretty good ice cream place; their ice cream is definitely creamy and not overly priced as well. I had 2 scoops in a cup for $6, which isn't bad for NYC, compared to other ice cream shops. I had the cookies and cream, which was great, and the strawberry, which wasn't anything special to be honest. Would recommend it!
Ample Hills is my all time favorite ice cream. They will let you try the different flavors at the counter and have pints available for purchase too. Try The Munchies if you like a sweet and salty flavor combo or their sorbet if you prefer something more low key. Also offer flavors like Ooey Gooey Butter Cake, Snap Mallow Pop, and Sweet Cream and Cookies.
Hands down my favorite ice cream spot in NYC. Fun and creative flavors which are also reflected in the branding. My favorite is the Munchies as I'm a fan of ice cream with a bunch of toppings but the crunchy bits of goodness which include pretzels, chips and m&ms are already mixed into the ice cream. A definite visit for a dessert in the city.
Tried out their ice cream based upon numerous recommendations, final thought: I did not like it at all. I believe that for any ice cream maker, the litmus test of how good a product they offer should be, how good their vanilla ice cream is. Even though some may consider it to be plain and boring, vanilla should be the base and then one can build up from there. I tried 1 scoop of the vanilla bean and 1 scoop of the ooey gooey butter cake. Neither impressed me. There is something about the texture and flavor that reminds me of eating ice cream from cold stone creamery which gets 1 star from me. I will go back at some point or maybe to one of the other locations to try the strawberry flavor.
