Astor Court

Story

The Astor Court, located in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, is a re-creation of a Ming Dynasty-style, Chinese-garden courtyard. The first permanent cultural exchange between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China, the installation was completed in 1981. Conceived by museum trustee Brooke Astor, the courtyard was created and assembled by expert craftsmen from China using traditional methods, materials and hand tools.OriginThe design of the museum's Chinese garden is "based on a small courtyard within a scholar's garden in the city of Suzhou, China, called Wang Shi Yuan, the Garden of the Master of the Fishing Nets." Statements by officials of the museum credit Astor with the idea for the installation, stating that she recalled such gardens from a period of her childhood spent in Beijing, China, "and thought that such a court would be ideal as the focal point for the permanent installation of Far Eastern art." The museum had purchased a collection of Ming Dynasty domestic furniture in 1976 with funds in part from the Vincent Astor Foundation. The hall adjacent to the courtyard and architecturally unified with it was created to provide a suitable space to display this collection.

Dined for morning breakfast - nice service and beautiful restaurant! I ordered the tofu scramble dish. It was good but I have honestly had better in other places, prices are steep too. However, the person I was dining with got the gluten free chocolate chip pancakes; it was very nice because for gluten free dishes, the chef will bring it out personally and the person I was dining with told me they were very good! Prices are expensive here.
Came here for a brunch during the weekend. I ordered egg Benedict and a champagne. The food is not really impressive but the ambience is kinda nice. The service was great and the staff was very friendly.
In all my reviews i always say a good restaurant which serves good food will not make the stomach feel bad end of the day or next day morning! This is one of them. We called and went there, in the call i had asked if they had vegetarian options. They had very few but they did have. The staff who received us remembered that i had called and asked for vegetarian food. The captain knew that we wanted vegetarian, so he was prepared when he came to our table! In St. Regis, In Astor Court we ordered lentil samosas! We ordered potatoes as sides and pasta arrabbiata. In desert we ordered cheese cake. And we had Bloody Mary Mediterranean. Portions were large, it was one of the best samosa we had, potatoes were so nicely made in olive oil and garlic light and the pasta had loads of veggies which i normally do not get inspite of asking for extra veggies! Ridwan was the captain, took care of us very well. Felt at home and the best meal of ours was in Astor Court. I recommend New Yorkers to go and try it!
Just had a wonderful spur of the moment lunch with my daughter. What can I say. Everything is perfect here. From the food, to the ambience, to the excellent service from hostesses and our waiter Juan who has been working here for over 25 years! Juan is a St. Regis legend, and he always takes beautiful care of all his clients. Can't recommend highly enough.
Nice ambiance. Courteous staff. Presentation well done and dinner was flavorful. Unfortunately, service was slow and not attentative. Main course was slow to arrive. Had to request drink refills. Had to go to hostess to request service at table. Noticed other tables with same issue and leaving their seats to request service. Edit-Dessert was great. Excellent presentation, but again, service very lacking. Was going to give 4 stars but drinks/water wasn't refilled and we had to go to Hostess for assistance and a check.
One of the most expensive breakfast places you can hit up in NYC. Food is definitely great quality but generally not worth the price you pay for it.Food: 5/5
Came for High Tea, I am a high tea lover! This was one of the worst high tea experiences I’ve ever had! We waited 30 min past our reservation time, it’s a small space so ok, but then it took another 15-20 min to get a pre-selected platter of the finger foods. The foods were not fresh, scones were dry and old tasting, and the bread was not fresh, everything tasted old. Service was soo slow, we waited 30 mins for water. Perhaps an off experience, but not worth $100+ per person. The space itself is very pretty, and the staff was nice when they finally arrived, but otherwise not a great experience, and I wouldn’t recommend. You’d be better off going to Lady Mendall.
Amazing breakfast. They had gluten free eggs Benedict which is a rare find. And it was exquisite. So good we came back the next day. Cook on my husband’s omelet was perfection. For the quality the price wasn’t too bad
Gilded age decor at an iconic NY gem. Stopped by during restaurant week and I'm glad I did. The champagne risotto is absolutely delicious. The filet mignon was succulent and the strawberry creme brulee was delightful. Service was impeccable. Would highly recommend.
I went to Astor during restaurant week so I ordered off the limited menu but I wasn't disappointed. I started with the burrata & focaccia and it was light and fresh in an above-average way. Next had the butternut squash risotto and it was equally pleasing: texture was perfect and the flavors were melodious. Be warned, however, that portions were just enough to satiate but you'll likely be hungry again in a few hours.
