Argentina; finalists in the FIFA World Cup 5 times; homeland to the Pope; leading producers of some of the greatest wines of our time; developers of the Tango; setting for the world renown musical, Evita; birthplace to Ernesto (Che) Guevara; creators of the famed Chimichurri sauce; and the birthplace to the Founders of BARROLUCO.
45 years in the making, this restaurant boasts the time honored traditions of its founders’ birthplace. From the time that Blas Daniel D’Angelo was 13 years old he began developing and honing his culinary capabilities. While working in a bakery until he was 30 years old, he was dreaming of creating his own business, little did he expect that instead of continuing to do so in his home country, that he would trek 5,111 miles, 1/5th of the circumference of our planet, to realize his dream. Today, Blas (Daniel), his wife, Mercedes, sons, Daniel (Adrian), Victor Omar, and daughter, Monica, have “opened the doors to the culture and experiences which flavor the Latin community,” to you.
When the family arrived here in Columbus, Ohio in the year 2000, they began baking cakes for friends and quickly found that there was a market for their craft in the area. As they continued to take and fill cake orders for the local Latino Community, D’Angelo’s Bakery was born in 2009. They continued to grow, and become locally known for their delicate confections, soon they began to cultivate a dream of becoming a restaurant.
In 2011, they met a friend, Luís (Danyel) Falcón, who had been completing a master’s degree in Marketing and Communication at Franklin University. Another friend also began to help the family to continue on its journey to success, Jorge Rivas-Cantos. Jorge’s culinary studies have been a valuable asset to the family. These new relationships helped to bring light to possibilities of furthering the D’Angelo’s reach. As the group worked together, they began to see a need to change the name from D’Angelo’s Bakery to simply, D’Angelo’s. They were able to secure the business name here in Ohio in 2012 as they prepared for, and took part in, the 17th Annual Festival Latino for the very first time.
The success that they achieved at that festival led to working to continue building on their dreams. Their second year participating in the Festival Latino helped them gain greater confidence in their coming success. This land of opportunity was opening its arms, widely, welcoming them. 2013 also held a challenge in its shadow. It was in the late summer, that the group learned that they could not continue to use the family name as the business name, and began to brainstorm as they worked to continue developing their menu.
One Saturday morning, early on in 2014, they were able to discover the name by which they hope to continually be remembered, BARROLUCO. The name is synonymous with a sandwich created in Chile and adopted by Argentines. As every region does, the Argentines took and made the sandwich their own, layering it with flavors that spoke to their own local culture and traditions. Now, the D’Angelo family and friends, bring the tradition, experience, and flavors of the BARROLUCO to us, here in Columbus, Ohio.
