Baru Bistro & Tapas

Story

In April of 2007 Baru Bistro & Tapas opened in the heart of the Garden District of New Orleans introducing a taste of the Caribbean on the merchant street Magazine. With the desire to interpret the traditional cuisine of the caribbean coast of Colombia and South America through fresh and local ingredients, Baru opened its doors as a tapas restaurant. Tapas are a tradition originating from Spain in which small portions are served on small plates, ideal for those who enjoy variety in their dining experience. Although Baru Bistro started out with very humble beginnings in a building previously an old grocery store, it didn’t take long for Baru to build a solid reputation for serving flavorful dishes with a unique twist. Baru Bistro & Tapas won “Best Latin Restaurant” in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011 in the Gambit as well as “Best New Restaurant” in 2008 in Where Ya’t magazine and was the Times Picayune top 100 restaurants. Also, Baru made its first nationally televised appearance on The Learning Channel in July of 2010 on “The Food Buddha”.

Awesome meal! I had a local session IPA Humildade, the grilled octopus with paprika potatoes and grilled veggies eggplant, zucchini, and pumpkin--or maybe another kind of orange squash, and for dessert I got the Greek yogurt with fruit compote apricots, cranberries, coconut flakes. Everything was perfectly prepared, and as I don't speak Portuguese, my waiter, Philip, was awesome at translating and describing each dish with a smile. Everyone was so friendly! This place was a little bit away from the touristy areas, but just a R$10 Uber ride from my hotel. And quite reasonable priced. I highly recommend Baru Restobar!

We went this weekend with 4 adults and two children.. an ABSURD delay for the orders to be ready.. but the worst of all is that after so much delay, some of the dishes were still cold.. I ordered a Sicilian risotto with filet mignon and the risotto was totally cold. As I was already feeling sick from being so hungry due to the delay, I ate it anyway… we also ordered a starter of pink prawns which turned out to be “dirty” with their entrails still on… what’s more, we asked 3 times to speak to the manager and he didn’t show up. … the waitresses simply said they would call and nothing, not even a response. It's not worth it.
We arrived as soon as it opened, we were the first customers of the day. We were 4 adults and 3 children. After waiting for 1h20, I went to the counter and asked the attendant how much longer it would take, since it had already been an incarnation that we were waiting for, I had hungry children and no one had come with any explanation. She explained that “there were a lot of dishes” 6, two of which were spaghetti sugo, but that it would be ready in another 5 minutes. It took another 15, but they finally arrived. There was no follow-up for the children, which took another 15 minutes and, when it arrived, they had already finished eating. We ate in 20 minutes because everyone was hungry and in a bad mood. There was, at no point, any attempt to alleviate the delay, there was no apology, there was nothing. For this restaurant, waiting 1h40 for food is an acceptable and normal practice. The food is ok. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.
I loved! The place is beautiful and we went to eat the Baixada Santos festival menu. It's a starter, main and dessert for 74.90, valid until November 20th. The service was special, they were very friendly, the food was delicious, we got crab drumstick, shimeji pastry, the main dish in homage to Fogaça couscous, bean puree, cashew vinaigrette and octopus and for dessert the flan pudding. perfect coffee and the carrot cake with brigadeiro. It is worth it! The only caveat was how long it took for the dishes to arrive, there was no one there and we still waited an hour just for the starter, and I was hungry.
We were at the restaurant with two couples and two babies. I don't recommend it 100% for anyone with children because there aren't many cauldrons and our babies needed to be in normal chairs or in a stroller. Note that they are one of those chairs that close, so it was definitely not the best setting for children. Regarding the service, it was good, but I believe that due to the full house, it took perhaps more than an hour for the food to arrive, in addition to not having taken one of the orders. Another issue is that the cover charge is compulsory, so whether you sit inside or outside, you have to pay. I didn't really like it because I really don't care for live music, I was there more for the food. In fact, my dish was excellent, their octopus is great! My wife's, which was File Mignon and potatoes, I thought was pretty ok. Anyway, I think it's worth visiting, the chef who welcomed us was super fun and attentive, but I would recommend going with time and without children so you can enjoy it without worry.
Very good experience! We ordered a risotto with grilled octopus and spaghetti with shrimp and they were extremely well executed. I recommend it to anyone who wants a different dinner or lunch on the coast, something that goes beyond the usual grilled fish. The drink was also very good, gin and tonic + tangerine and girl's finger pepper. The experience was worth it!
An explosion of flavors in the bar's food rotation... the chef is very friendly and comes to the tables to ask if you want anything else, Felipe and Carol are also very friendly and attentive. You'll find that it's worth it for those who don't want to eat all-you-can-eat, there's the a la carte option which has a lot of variety. Baru is a pleasant surprise here in Guarujá, congratulations.
It took 1h15 for 2 risottos with just one person in charge: either there was a lack of people or ingredients in the kitchen. They also indicated not to order fish because it would take 40 minutes and all the other dishes would come out "quickly". Part of the grilled chicken arrived a little raw inside, I didn't return it for obvious reasons. The salad didn't come dressed or with dressing, but it serves 2 people well. Beautiful decor, good service and reception, it seems like the bar works best. I hope they improve on the restaurant side.
I expected more from the proposal! It's expensive and the food didn't meet my expectations. We were 4 people. For starters we ordered the bar mix which is a little bit of each really a little bit! 4 units of each, arancini risotto dumplings filled with mozzarella were very well made but had no flavor, Arabic dumplings were what I liked the most... It resembles a kibbeh and had a delicious mint sauce, tapioca brick hard as a brick and no contrast with the pepper jelly... also tasteless and rustic potatoes, which saved the starter. To drink I ordered a negroni, and this one was very good! My dish was Cambucu Baru Hake With Baru crust cumaru type chestnut, corn flour and spices. The crust was not crispy and was moist. Served with banana tartar this one is quite tasty and added acidity to the dish, white rice and bland pirão. The fish, once again... tasteless. I had to grind salt right away because for my taste... it was sad. Vini asked Muslin for Octopus Octopus tentacles in paprika butter with parsnip puree. Comes with steamed pods! It was hard and rubbery and unlike the photo on the menu, there was only 1 tentacle. The muslin was delicious.
