Blue Valley Bushidokan Karate is a Martial Arts Dojo that centers around Self Defense.. Plain and Simple. In a world where many arts have succumbed to a capitalistic and business oriented product. Mr. Stillwell provides a training. If you are looking for martial arts training and by training I mean learning the proper skills, mentality, and lifestyle of a martial artist or a warrior, this is where you want to be. This is a Dojo in which anyone at any age can come for any amount of time and rest assured that the skills and training that they learn, will be applicable in a street situation or in a dangerous encounter. You will learn how to defend yourself. The teachers primary focus is this although they have much experience in competitive and demonstrative martial arts. But ultimately, you or your children will learn how to be a warrior inside and out. In this review, I will not talk about the Bushidokan system, you can look it up for yourself and you will know its quality if you enter any one of the Dojos. Mr. Stillwell Karate and Mr. Kinser Judo/Jujitsu along with many other experienced teachers Mr. Northcott, Matt Malone, etc. have been imparting this knowledge and training to many people for over 40+ years. This dojo has been present in Kansas City for over 30+ years. I think that speaks for itself on its quality. Especially because it is not a flashy Dojo, doesn't have any special plans, and doesn't guarantee that everyone will become a black belt. It is first and foremost a Dojo, a center of education in the most ancient sense of the word. Mr. Stillwell and Mr. Kinser for years have kept the tradition of the ancient Japanese by imparting wisdom on life through the medium of martial arts. Herein lies the uniqueness of this Dojo. Skills can be taught anywhere, but cultivating character for young men and women and providing an environment where in a dangerous world, your children, or yourself can be fearless, strong, confident, and honest in every aspect of life. This is what this Dojo provides. In my view a very rare place to find in the world. One that provides an education that cultivates human values without discrimination of religion, race, personal beliefs, etc.. This type of education, you will not find anywhere not even in our modern public education system. There is a reason that many previous students of Mr. Stillwell and Mr. Kinser, often come back to visit them and often people who have trained at this Dojo bring their kids. Its plain and simple. These teachers care for their students and make a positive impact on their life. They will treat you as a human being, not a customer. They are teachers, not businessmen and they take pride in being first and foremost cultivators of knowledge and character. This does not take away from the quality of skills that are taught here. They have produced many nationally recognized fighters and competitors. The training here has never compromised on its standards, and the rank is earned only to those that deserve it. I will not ask anyone to believe based on a review, but if you are interested, come to a class, and if you wish to train with some of the more advanced students, you will see for yourself, the quality of training. Children will get instruction for their capacities your children may not enjoy every class, but they will learn something valuable every class and adults are trained with a more serious tone that is more realistic to the dangers of the world. It is not easy, it is not quick, and it is not always fun, but it is good training that flat out works. Bushidokan is adaptive in its methods, however its principles remain stable. This you can be assured. I believe for a safer and happier world, this training should be provided to everyone. Mr. Stillwell and Mr. Kinser have created an environment in which any person regardless of ability, age, race, religion, caste or creed will be accepted as a human being and has the opportunity to learn real self-defense and life lessons that ensure a happier life.
Bushidokan is Kansas City's own martial art. It is an integrated system of self defense that has sport application, and has been developed since the early 60s by Jim Harrison and his students. Rank belts are dearly earned, never bought, never awarded haphazardly. Steve Stillwell Karate/kickboxing, and Steve Kinser Jodo/Jujitsu/MMA are instructors of the highest caliber, each with a good pedigree both as fighters themselves and as coaches to champion-level competitors.
My two children have taken karate here for 8 years. This is the real deal.... not for parents wanting rapid belt advancement. Perfect for parents wanting kids who practice respect & discipline.
If you want the real deal, this is the place.
