It has been 12 years since I first trained in karate, and after many experiences and interactions with different martial arts schools, instructors, and students, I can confidently say that Brazilian Capoeira in Denver has something for everyone. The classes are challenging and will make you break a sweat, but I have never left a class without a smile on my face. The individuals who make up the group are very welcoming, and will even offer a hand to help you up after they put you on your butt.
I've been a part of Brazilian Capoeira Denver for over a year now, and I can't recommend it enough. I'm a clunky, non-martial arts trained kinda-dude, but they welcomed me in and never made me feel stupid or out of place. There's a warm community of people that you'll became a part of when you first step in the door. I came because I wanted to take the next step in my personal fitness and to learn something new. Capoeira definitely accomplishes both goals. Rick and the other leaders set a high level of excellence while keeping the environment fun and taking the necessary time to personally help any newbies that need it as I often do.
I want to start this review with a little background: I am a thirty-something professional without any experience in martial arts unless you count a few months of judo in the 6th grade, no experience in dance, and certainly no familiarity with acrobatics. I am by no estimation a fitness buff. I have generally avoided any kind of group athletics or fitness classes in the past. A while back, I was introduced to Capoeira and became fascinated by the tempered and disciplined ferocity, the cultural expressiveness, and the grace of movement present in the practice. I have often thought, "it's amazing that people can do that!" I never thought I'd have the courage to try it... At Brazilian Capoeira, my thoughts about what I am capable of doing have been upended, and it is a testament to the welcoming and skilled teaching community that I keep coming back for more! There is never any pretense that Capoeira is easy here. The challenge of the physicality and coordination involved in playing Capoeria is achievable because of the work that the owner, Rick, has done to cultivate a community that is alive with humor, friendship, and a spirit of fellowship. The balance of learning language and music, building psychical strength and coordination, and engaging with others through spontaneous, improvised movements works out your brain and heart at least as hard as it works out your body. I have been convinced by my own experience here that, no matter what your fitness level is, your age, or your background, you will leave a class at Brazilian Capoeira with a sense of satisfaction, achievement, and anticipation for the next class. I am very grateful to the Brazilian Capoeira community. Giving this place a try is one of the best decisions I have made in a very long time!
What you receive at Brazilian Capoeira is nothing short of incredible. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by the friendly, welcoming community. The instructor, Rick, is great - amazing classes aside - he has built up a community that is welcoming to everyone. It doesn't matter who you are, where your from, or how old you are, from the moment you walk in to Brazilian Capoeira, you'll feel welcomed. I can't say enough good things about this place and its owner, Rick.
