Carmo

About

Carmo is a tropical café, catering to omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike.

Story

Carmo is a New Orleans-based tropical restaurant and bar with a commitment to providing vegans, vegetarians and omnivores alike with healthy and affordable dishes in a warm, friendly and casual atmosphere. The menu is built upon the rich, multi-cultural culinary influences found throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America, West Africa, Southeast Asia, Gulf South and beyond and features eclectic and traditional/traditionally-inspired dishes with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients, as well as unique and little-known flavors from around the world.

The menu includes selections such as a Burmese Tea Leaf Salad, pão de queijo, acarajé and daily soups and specials from around the tropics. Carmo’s raw seafood menu features the region’s freshest fish prepared in a variety of styles, including shima sashimi (raw, flash-cured fish, a style common to Japan’s tropical islands), tiradito (a Peruvian version of sashimi, smothered in aji amarillo pepper sauce) and rum-cured, cold-smoked yellowfin tuna. There’s also a raw vegan menu which introduces diners to shio-koji style preparation, avocados, organic tofu and other fresh vegetables lightly fermented using a koji (aspergillus oryzae) marinade, which almost magically imparts distinct umami characteristics to any food to which it is exposed. The beverage menu is equally as unique, featuring exotic fruit such as juice of the cocoa fruit (cacau), açerola, cupuaçu, graviola (sour sop), caja and caju, which infuse Carmo's juice and cocktail menu with exciting new flavors.

Sustainability is an intrinsic part of Carmo’s mission, with certifications by local and national environmental and conservation organizations, including the only three-star rating in the state of Louisiana by the Green Restaurant Association, and the only restaurant in the state to be certified by SeafoodWatch.

This is such a great place. Everyone should check it out!! The food is absolutely amazing. You can't go wrong with anything you order! We all had the crepes for breakfast. I really loved the banana crepes the most. My son had the egg & havarti crepe, which was phenomenal & also came with a small salad with the most amazing dressing. The only thing I didn't love was the coffee. The server seemed unsure about it, and it was lukewarm & overly bitter. I also asked for some oat milk, of which she brought less than a teaspoon in a little cup, which wasn't quite enough even for my small cup of coffee. I didn't notice the coffee station in the room until later, or I would have walked over to see what the options there were. Even so, one bad cup of coffee wasn't enough to overshadow how wonderful the rest of our meal was! I would definitely go here again! Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian items! Dietary restrictions: Lots of GF, including crepes & cheese bread!
Beautiful restaurant with lots of wooden bench tables. Haitian artwork surrounds each dining area, enough for the restaurant to double as a gallery. We had a large 50 to 60 person party in the back dining area. It's the only restaurant visited during a 11 day work trip to New Orleans that had vegan meat options. We attended a brunch with gluten free tortillas and vegan sausage, all kinds of pastries and jellies. It was amazing! Clean bathrooms, friendly staff. An absolute must visit if ever in New Orleans. Vegetarian options: Vegan sausage and tofu scramble Dietary restrictions: Vegan and gluten free options Kid-friendliness: Roomy, large tables with benches, very picnic style with amazing, colorful artwork.
The food was alright. We tried the Rico plate and the chicharon sandwich. The flavor was good but nothing special. I found the Rico a bit too sweet for my taste. The coffee was not great so I would recommend getting coffee somewhere else. The highlight was the Brazilian cheese balls which were a nice texture. Also had the mango juice which was nice and sweet. Service was slow but friendly. We got the cheese balls last after we finished our main dishes when they're more of a starter item. We did have to ask for a lot of essentials like water and sugar/milk for coffee, etc. Never got a drink menu but we ended up checking online. Overall, the food was okay but the service and atmosphere has room for improvement. Vegetarian options: The menu seemed to have a lot of vegan and vegetarian options for most of the dishes. Everything our table ordered was outstanding! Some of the best vegan food from a restaurant. Absolutely 5 stars. However, our main server was pretty blunt and unfriendly. Their attitude was very off putting and caught us so off guard that it kind of tainted our overall experience. Overall, would come back and try it again, but would hope for another server.
Really loved the vibe and music. Service wasn't the best. We ordered one appetizer and the vegetarian Rico. The Rico was served cold even though it should have been hot. I had to ask the waiter for more water, and she didn't check on us other than taking our order and serving food. It took a long time to even pay the bill. I'd go back for coffee or a glass of wine, but the food was way too expensive for what it was just serviceable and the service was lackluster.
Amazing food and service was excellent. We had a late lunch here, so there were only a few people there but this place is highly recommended. We had the sweet potato fritters, Rico plate, cucumber salad and red beans and rice - all were excellent! Vegetarian options: Vegan and gluten free options Dietary restrictions: Vegan and gluten free options
Food was fantastic and neat space that’s eco-certified food cooked with solar power. The manager that waited on us a few times filling in the gaps really was friendly and knowledgeable. Our main server was awful. We had a full dinner with drinks and dessert and were given the bare minimum attention and care. We’ll only come back for the food and hope to have a better service experience.
This was probably my favorite restaurant while visiting New Orleans. So many vegan options to choose from. I had the vegan Trifongo and vegan Brazilian cheese bread. The trifongo was so authentic and delicious, and the cheese bread was great too. I got there just after they opened and it was already starting to fill up. I can see why people love it. So glad I came across this place.
Cute spot with a loft vibe. A healthy spin on some well known Caribbean dishes. Plates are very pleasing visually, however, for me they, the do not match in flavor profile. Eating vegan or healthy also comes with a higher price tag. So be mindful of that if choosing to come here. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and street parking.
Carmo is a must-visit for vegans visiting New Orleans. Besides delicious foods with local flavor like Rice and Beans with vegan Sausage, their takes on international cuisines are fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish and drink, and would definitely recommend—especially for mixed groups with vegans and omnis. Vegetarian options: Numerous vegan and vegetarian options for starters, sides, mains, salads, and even dessert. You could go back several times and not have the same thing.
