Take your chances all up to you I enjoyed and loved it at my time of stay being there until ....... I am safe. Also, I want to thank all staffs and well as the workers at yw/mca kept up a very clean environment all areas and mostly checking up wellness keeping residents safer loved
They are very rude. I came in for my husband and children and the lady kicked me out with pneumonia to stand outside for four hours in the cold without any help or assistance.
Back in 1998 while I lived in Newark, I had the opportunity to stay at The YM/WCA. As it was a temporary stay during Christmas time. I had a5yr old little boy and a8 month old baby girl. It was a last minute thing that I ended up there. Much to my surprise It really turned out to be an experience I wouldn't soon forget. The staff there at the time was so tentative towards myself & my children. We were treated so kind, they had gifts, Santa Clauses, and everything a child could ask for at Christmas time! Thank You all for the Hospitality and kindness
My family visited this location for the first time. The building is need of an upgrade. The greeter was professional and knowledgeable. The check in process was chaotic because we had to fill out forms and there were about ten people standing at the desk and only one person behind it doing her best to handle everyone. She did a good job with it. The pool was smaller than I thought and one of the life guards were terrible and rude. I will not be returning.
This place is good as far as gym membership but as a family trying to make the best out of the situation this place is not it. Its ran by a bunch of ghetto ass people that do not care about the families just the money that they can receive... There are bed bugs here there are mice here roaches like big water bug roaches I never seen an exterminator visit and the only time they tidy up the place is when welfare is coming... so if you're looking for a good gym the YMCA is the place but if you looking for a place for you and your family to stay while you try to get on your feet I repeat do not come to the YMCA!!! it's like Bad Girls Club & Love & Hip Hop YMCA shelter Edition!!
I just want to thank Ms Brenda and Ms Asanane for basically changing something that was absolutely horrifying to me I obtain covid I survived it but I was left with a lot of financial hardship and didn't know how I was going to get out of it I was extremely depressed I'm a single mother who receives no assistance from the state and by the grace of God I was pointing in the direction of the YMCA and just on a whim called to see if they can help me with my situation I was behind on my rent and lost my job and thought I would soon be homeless with my 3 year old baby I honestly don't know how to repay them they were so sweet and nice something I didn't expect but through the whole process they helped me believe that people still do care and I thank you guys again from the bottom of my heart
I give this place 2 stars for the handful or less of the people who work there who actually tried to help and make a difference in the families who are struggling . However, with that said there were unfathomable issues with the way this facility is run that people with the authority to change it seem to turn a blind eye. My family and I were residents here for about a month and a half when the pandemic hit hard and we were jobless, homeless and have our two small children under 3. Food was almost always stolen, bathrooms were perfect place to catch any other disease due to poor maintenance, rules that are clearly posted by each elevator yet are subject to change based off of whichever counselor was on duty that shift. Which speaking of these "counselors" on particular one had an issue with my husband for no particular, rational reason. 1st week with us being there he had said a remark that was meant to be funny to me about the use of a microwave and the counselor on duty Ms. McGuiver immediately assumed he was directing this comment to her and she took offense and began to be confrontational to him. There would be two more incidents with this Ms. McGuiver where she would ignore him speaking to her, not open our door, removed him from our floor for over 1,5 hours at 8pm while I had my children in the room. The final tipping point was when she again call security on my husband for playing music while he cooked my family and other family dinner, accusing him of breaking up the fun she was having with the other older children making tic tock videos. Mind you she had no face mask on, ignored social distancing rules, and was already playing loud music and having a large group of people in the kitchen area. Long story short I did not stand by and intervened when she was confronting my husband and security showed up where we were both threatened to be removed from the floor and directed to me if I wanted to "throw hands with her". I am deeply appalled by her actions in the month and a half my family was there and had spoken to Mr. Abdoul to take some action to correct thus behavior. I hope someone implements change there because families and individuals who are already in a tough situation do not deserve to be treated as such. Ms. McGuiver should not be a counselor at the YMCA or work in any facility where in the job description entails to be HELPFUL and RESPECTFUL to people in need.
The Newark Y is one of Newark's best kept secrets. I have been a member for 4 years, and love it! Of course there is room for improvements, but where can you go where there isn't. I specifically go for the Aqua Aerobics. Again, the classes as well as the instructor are great! I can go on and on, but I suggest that you come down for the day, and establish your own opinion. Oh, did I mention the fee? Well it's also great. They even have a sliding scale for those whose income fits a certain criteria. With all that being said, just come check it out for yourself!
I cannot recommend this YMCA as it is not well managed. In Q1 2017, during listed open pool hours, the pool was closed just as much as it was open. When I brought this problem up to their management, as a paying customer, I was ignored. Be sure to call ahead if you plan to swim. Otherwise you may show up with your swimsuit and no pool to swim in. I will still go to YMCAs, but not the Newark YMCA. Having said that, the Rutgers Newark gym is open to the public and very reasonably priced.
For shelter residents : dirty , roaches, mice , no a.c. in summer time for homeless residents, only paying customers, so its blistering hot; i watched a baby get hospitalized. So many fights and people dont get kicked out for it and that's a personal safety concern. Write ups for complaints arent taken seriously. Any fixes are only done when its inspection time. Food gets stolen all the time. Bathrooms are BEYOND disgusting and unsanitary. We once found a Bag of heroin in the bathroom. There are 2 bathrooms on each floor, so its only 4 showers for 30 families per floor.
