Chalmette National Cemetery is one of the most unique National Cemeteries I have ever visited. Not quite 100 Yards wide and 1,000 yards long there are 12 ranks of graves on either side of the single road the bisects the cemetery. The cemetery contains over 15,000 Americans, 6,773 unknown, veterans of every war between 1812 to Viet Nam, including one who fought in the Battle of Chalmette.al Cemetery
GTN Recommended - This beautiful and peaceful cemetery holds the memory of hundreds of American, British, and Native troops primarily from the battle of Chalmette, and a few other military battles since. It is a lovely spot to pause and reflect, and to be grateful for the sacrifices of so many that we all benefit from.
Chalmette National Cemetery, established in 1864, final resting place for Union soldiers that died in Louisiana during Civil War. Also remains of veterans from the Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam and few soldiers from the War of 1812. Beautiful cemetery, well kept. Volunteers clean headstones during volunteer month.
Great park to drive through while in your car. If you go in December/January, the weather is so good and windy that you could take a book and stay in your car for a wonderful afternoon. Great green lawns and quite some birds too. Dont miss walking up the track behind the visitor center that takes you to Mississippi river basin where you could catch glimpse of docked ships.
Great experience. Park Ranger was very informative. I learned about a part of the US history that was previously unaware.
May we all remember these heroes who fought for the freedom and liberty of the people of this great country. Let's remember and honor this country's good and noble purposes ordained in Godly faith from the Declaration of Independence thru the Gettysburg address memorialized at this cemetery.
It’s pretty cool to have a 200-year battlefield just a few miles form your house. It is primarily a large field that doubles as a cemetery, but the visitor center is informative and the rangers lead several talks throughout the day. Not a bad place to spend an hour or so when you need a break from partying on Bourbon Street.
My daughter and I took an educational trip to the battlefield on the Creole Queen in December 2015. The tour guide was simply amazing with his colorful/exciting narrative of the Battle of New Orleans and the history of the area before/after the battle. Amazing! A must see adventure for any one visiting New Orleans!
Historic Landmark in Chalmette, LA where the Battle of New Orleans took place led by General Andrew Jackson. The Creole Queen Riverboat is docked on the Mississippi River at the Chalmette Battlefield where they give daily tours. Besides a Cemetery, this National Park also has Beautiful Monuments and an Antebellum Home. There is also a Visitors Center with Battle of New Orleans memorabilia, short videos outlining the Battle and it's Commanders, and a lovely Gift Shop.
I have been to the Chalmette Monument and the House next door. I came here on a Veteran's day to pay tribute to the fallen. This cemetery is extremely old and very well taken care of. There were other people putting down remembrances as well. Very calm, quiet and peaceful.
