COLORS Restaurant - Detroit

Story

Colors Detroit Restaurant is a fully-functioning, revenue generating restaurant that specializes in “farm to table” cuisine and operating the Colors Hospitality Opportunities for Workers Institute (CHOW Institute) - a non-profit front of the house training center for low to moderate income Detroit area residents. Colors Detroit is managed by Restaurant Opportunities Center of Michigan – which is an affiliate of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, a 501(C) 3 federally tax exempt organization with a 7.5 million dollar budget. Colors Detroit has been the recipient of funding support from entities such as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Comerica Foundation. Our restaurant partners include Russell Street Deli and Rose’s Fine Dining in Detroit, Levy’s Restaurants at Ford Field, and .Zingerman’s of Ann Arbor.

Since opening in 2012, Colors Detroit has trained nearly 300 Detroit area residents for entry level front of the house positions (e.g. servers, bar backs, food runners) and placed nearly 70% of those trainees in local restaurants (including Colors) within 90 days. These low to moderate income residents have been mostly women and people of color. It is important to note that “returning citizens” and people receiving public assistance have been significantly represented in these training numbers. The community at large benefits from our job creation and job placement efforts as these dollars add to the city’s tax base.

Colors Detroit has been the recipient of several local and national awards for its workforce development efforts and was the only restaurant nominated for the Detroit Metro Convention Bureau’s 2015 William H. McLaughlin Hospitality Award for Service Excellence. Food bloggers have identified Colors Detroit as one of the Top Ten Restaurants to Visit in Detroit and we were recently featured in the Metro Times and in an article appearing on the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers website. We are proud to be a part of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United’s Diners Guide App and the newly developed TopServer Game App. Colors Detroit employs three full time staff members, two part-time staff, and 20 on call front -of-the house staff.

It was a busy day in Detroit, and Colors got us right in before the football game. The food was delicious! The sweet potato wontons were amazing. They took a few extra minutes for our fries, but it was worth the wait. They had to hand cut some more to fry up! The menu was limited that night due to the game, so some options I wanted to try were not available. Was not disappointed with what we had...honestly, would have ate 2 plates of the wontons!!!
We were seated right away, I ordered a 12 oz steak medium and it was great. The whole place is great and I would have gave it 5 stars but never once did the waitress come back to ask how is everything? Do you want a refill on your drinks. I know the staff are trainees but they could of had more on staff. I will come back again.
Excellent food for a great price. I had their Humus and it some of the best I've had in the Detroit area. The service staff always makes sure you are taken care of. I love the old bowling alley floors. What looks to have once been a wine rack has been turned into artwork. Parking is a bit of a pain in the button.
A great gem hidden in plain site. A great mission, great food farm to table. I had a quick lunch, the food was very good as was the service. It's not a coney, so if that's what you want go elsewhere. Good food at a good price. A very nice understated place loaded with character.
Grabbed a tremendously cooked and seasoned steak here. Came with fingerling potatoes and cooked onions. Seasoning on steak had some kick to it, but added so much flavor. Space was nice and cozy. It seems a bit tucked away. We came a bit early for dinner, but only one other table was occupied. Service was great. Would definitely recommend checking this place out for anyone visiting downtown. Great place to enjoy a dinner.
The setting was pretty casual, wait staff is great & cook was very nice. Love the creative menu, but I'd say a few signature drinks would be nice. Also I wasn't aware of the farm-to-table feature, nobody mentioned it. Food was definitely pretty salty on 3 out of the 4 dishes we ordered. Had to send the Salmon back, the second order was perfect though. Groupon is great. I will try again, hopefully not as much salt in dishes next time.
The appetizers, drinks, and service were all VERY, very good! Steak, salmon, and burger all were cooked perfectly. I wish the ribeye had some flavor though. Throw on a rub, or maybe smoke it a few minutes before presentation. The atmosphere is no-frills, but the building has a long, interesting history and the restaurant's social mission is awesome!
Good food good deed. Colors employs people with a past who are making a future. Casual atmosphere and friendly faces may fool you into thinking the food will be just okay, but it is excellent food. Real chefs using local sources and innovative recipes. Considering the fact that you are helping our community and getting a fabulous meal it is shockingly inexpensive. Go to Colors.
We went to this establishment and were a little concerned when we entered. This doesn’t look like some of the restaurants from downtown. The menu is small but the staff is terrific and friendly and the food was very reasonably priced and delicious!! We will definitely be back to this place! If the atmosphere improves a 5 star rating would be there. But 5 star on the food
Great, homey, comfort food. Great service. Great price. Quiet. A hidden gem in Detroit, can't recommend this place enough. If you have an event like a conference near this place, go here for lunch for sure! I don't know about the dinner offerings, but for lunch it's perfect.
