Great place to do a walking tour of a historic Cemetery. Self-guided or with a docent. Filled with historic DC notables. Tours brochures available at the office, at the gate or on their website. Lots of other activities throughout the year as well like yoga, 5ks and festivals.

Today, I took a tour through one of the forgotten places in DC...the "Congressional Cemetery" in Southeast. From the time you enter the cemetery gates, its as if you are transported back into time. The are headstones dating back as earily as the late 1700’s. There are a number of congress persons buried in the cemetery, and their headstones are unique and very meticulously aligned with their congressional accomplishments. There are a several flag officers and enlisted service members buried in the cemetery that fought in the War of 1812- Vietnam.
Of note, it was an honor to visit the grace of John Philip Souza (The March King). If you have ever waved our Nation's flag to "Stars and Stripes forever"... You have enjoyed Souza's music. Additionally, the cemetery contains Col Wainwright, the Executive Officer to Col Archibald Henderson whom was the Commadant of the Marine Corps at the time.
Col Henserson is buried in the cemetery also.
Take a few hours out of your day to visit this historic place and consider the times in which these great people lived and the state of our country during these early years.

Congressional Cemetery in SE DC is full of Civil War superstars: Alfred Pleasanton, Thaddeus Stevens, and Andrew Humphreys among others. You are also allowed to walk your dog here and there is a program where you pay to maintain the cemetery in exchange for being able to walk your dog leash-less.

I just have to say that the ppl here are truly amazing!! My fam and I thought that u had to be part of Congress or military to be here, but u don't. They take regular ppl as well. My fam and I had really been going thru the Sunday interment struggle because a lot of cemeteries do not have Sundy interment. If they do, they're only open until 3pm at the latest. Mr. Paul Williams (President) made it happen for us!! He was so accommodating. He worked with our 4:30pm time, we could pay in all the forms of payment we had available (check, cash, card), and it was a big weight lifted. I will forever be grateful to this place. Big ups to Mr. Williams, Crystal Pate (director), and staff. The best part is that we live right across the street, so I can see my dad whenever I want. Great place , so check them out for your loved one or yourself.

I had heard about this cemetery but like most thought Arlington was the one to visit but had a couple of hours spare and decided to take visit.
It was an incredible experience and wished I had more time to wander around the many poignant memorials.
