Founded in 1972 by award-winning documentarians Jon Alpert and Keiko Tsuno, DCTV provides the general public with low-cost access to production equipment, editing facilities, hundreds of filmmaking workshops, screenings, events and more. Well known for flagship programs like PRO-TV, in which under-served youth receive free access to media arts instruction, equipment, facilities, and mentorship, DCTV is working to ensure that all media-makers are given substantial opportunities to move forward in their lives artistically, educationally, and professionally. DCTV is also an award-winning documentary production house, and the soon-to-be home of the first US documentary-only cinema.

Workshops are cheap, yes but for a reason. Essentially this is the quality of New York Film Academy don’t ever trust working with people from NYFA - they drop cameras due to lack of training. I went to Digital Cinematography class that was described as “In this Digital Cinematography workshop, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of camera work and how to achieve your project's aesthetic goals as a DP. You'll have hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment, including the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro and Sony FX6 cameras.” Sadly my workshop leader did not actually introduce the use of the cameras + lens or any practice with shooting until the final 1.5 hr of the first part of the workshop. He spent 4-5 hours droning on about the difference between a reverse shot and 30 degree angles, which quite frankly is cinema studies textbook material. The thing that really pissed me off was that this Instructor Patrick Reis didn’t actually know any of the menu settings for Sony Fx6 such as putting on focus peaking, or dynamic range. He endorsed BlackMagic ursa Mini Pro which is not what I want to train on. There are a lot of reasons why I don’t like BlackMagic over Sony or Canon or Arri. But please please don’t falsely advertise your workshops.
DCTVNY is a film school for free for student from 14 to 21, and wallet friendly workshops for people over 21 and interested in learning filmmaking. There is a wonderful Cinema, focus mainly in documentary but open for more events, spaces are available for rentals and there is a house of production as well in the place. Be welcome to visit reaching out to them before
This is an absolute gem in New York City. It is an excellent resource for aspiring and existing visual arts professionals. They have great workshops, facilities and the latest equipment for use and rental for members. They offer courses and much lower rates and higher quality than other venues in the city.
Love the place. I was here for production week. It was a great experience. The equipment available was suitable for first-timers to learn on. Definitely taking other classes here when I have time.
Great classes & facility!
Any filmmaker that lives and operates in New York City would be doing themselves a great disservice by not coming to DCTV. They provide filmmakers with great screenings, panels, studio space, a fantastic youth program and they're the only rental house in the city that does not require insurance. DCTV has helped me tremendously throughout the years and it's a mecca for independent film and media makers.
Beautiful venue. Nicely renovated and free popcorn for film festival! Would come again.
Its a wonderful place the gave me a career when I didnt have one. The staffs, workers and students are awesome its a good place when I'm in I feel like its my home.
Great spot for youth to learn film.
