Mom here. They starved my son and drugged him beyond recognition. He was fit and an athlete when he went in. He looked anorexic when he left. I offered to provide him more food. I was told no. When I complained about him being drugged they said well now he is compliant. The final straw was how long it took for them to take him to the Doctor. I came and took him to our pediatrician. He said his infection was so bad he would call social services on parents that let it get so bad.
I was here for a year when I was 11-12 and honestly there were ups and downs. I put one star because they deal with situations so horribly. The staff had screamed at me constantly and any little mistake is dealt with by locking you in an empty white room with nothing inside it and any time you knock on the door to asked for something the staff would mad. When I left I was released to a group home with horrible reviews and they treated me poorly, so clearly no background checks were done, and several of my personal items were not returned to me upon my release. I’m sixteen now, so this was several years ago, and I don’t know if the system has changed at all, but I for one did not enjoy my experience my stay or care here.
Denver Children's Home can be a very difficult place for anyone who is unwilling to become a better version of themselves and for anyone looking to be enabled in incorrect behaviors. The staff are kind and empathetic but they hold you to accountability for your own actions. They genuinely care for each client. If you choose to try your hardest and put your best effort in to becoming the best person you can, then DCH will have a continuous positive effect on your life. The work done there is priceless. Compared to other residential facilities, DCH is incredibly humane. You will only see bad results when you put bad work in. It is a place for people to take responsibility of their lives and make positive change.
Literally the worst place a traumatized kid can go to for help. The RC is like a room they put you in, but if keep walking out, they'll lock you in it. The staff are completely clueless to how to go about a kid acting out. They will still pin you to the ground. They don't care. I was at this place from 2018-2021, and throughout my time there, I had success, but the way they executed the program was Terrible. The therapists acts like they know what you're talking about. This place should have been shut down years ago, They kept the passing from my Grandma away from me. And you can tell when they Wang to keep a kid really bad
They forced me me take medication that made me sleepy, then punished me for always sleeping. Nearly all my punishments revolved around me sleeping. I always missed breakfast. I'd sleep in, suprise suprise- get in trouble and have to spend the first two hours of the day in the OD isolation room I remember one time I was in the OD severely malnurished. I got up to throw my dinner away but stood up too quickly and feinted. When I came to, I was laying face first in my tray with mashed potatoes all over my face. I saw a trail of corn, I was trying to figure out where I was and what was happening. My eyes followed the trail to a set of feet pointing at me, I looked up to see a staff member upset with me because according to her I threw my food at her. I was laying face first on the ground with food all over my face & she carried on like attacked her. I was 15 & 16 years old here. I didn't know it was called gaslighting. I just kept thinking "This is like a real life episode of The Twilight Zone."
They are doing a great work helping kids with various issues.
I was at DCH in the eighties just trying to locate people who were there around 88 -90. I was in UPTOWN I think. I remember we use to sneak in Midtown. We use to crawl so not to be seen by the counselors in the booth. Lol. But that's neither here not there. Just trying to locate some folks who may have been there around that time .
Love this place, Lauren has been a blessing to us and our child, with her help and the staff's help. our child has a future to look forward too, the skills that he's learned, have provide him with a lifetime knowledge and capability in everyday living, we absolutely, would recommend, this home to anyone interested in needing help for their child!!!!
My experience seemed as if Interns did not have enough real world training to be helpful or an understanding how to use technology. The therapist seemed out of touch and unable to relate with real world constraints due to covid and work. I had hoped for better but hopefully therapy and the couple things we learned will help. I can see how the concepts are helpful but the execution of the program was poor.
