I was in the mood for Caribbean food and wanted to give this spot a try. I called in my order of the whiting special and shrimp patty. When I arrived parking was terrible so parked illegally. I ran in and grabbed my food and paid. I first dug into the patty which was good and not messy. When I had the whiting special it was pretty good and very filling. I had a good experience.
1. When i walked into this establishment it smelled like acrylic. Why? I dont know. 2. The mac and cheese looked and is disgusting. Why does it has cinnamon in it? I dont know. It honestly does not need it. Does not require cinnamon AT ALL! 3. The ox tails and stew chicken has no flavor at all. Disgusting. The ox tails also has cinnamon in it. Which DOES NOT NEED IT. Whatever yall doing with cinnamon; for the love of almighty above put it DOWN! Needs flavor and seasonings. If i could give zero starts i would. Do not waste your time nor money on this place.
Had a veggie patty and a ginger beer for a quick meal. The patty had cabbage and carrots, which took kind of took me by surprise. The chicken roti is palm-sized and filling. Both are delicious for this being my first time eating here. The only thing was the volume of the music. It was good, old school hip-hop; but again, the volume
HORRIBLE! My Kale Salad did not have the ingredients or dressing as listed on the menu. The Cashier was rushing me and another customer as if I didn’t just place a sizable order. The food is entirely overpriced. They nickel and dime you for everything sauce even though they don’t have what’s listed on the menu?!?! They didn’t give me the courtesy by letting me know that they didn’t have the ingredients for what I order, which I paid full price... I found out when I opened my takeout bag.
Haven’t had many dishes here however the beef patties and the jerk chicken patties are really tasty. I also had the spinach patty and was impressed. Will visit in the future and try other dishes I do recommend this spot
I have been reading all the bad reviews left on here, and I think that the posters who left those reviews should give this business a second chance. The reason why I think so, is due to the fact that Downtown Caribbean Eats is a newer business, and like many other restaurants opened during the pandemic, has been having difficulty attracting and retaining the appropriate staff. Potential customers will be happy to know that my friend and former boss, Karen was recently hired as their main chef. She has a wide reputation as an excellent cook, having been in the food and beverage industry for over 30 years. In fact, when we used to work together, she used to bring in her leftovers from home to give to her favorite employees. Needless to say, it was a good life to be one of her favorites! I went down to visit her last Saturday after working a double security shift at the airport on an empty stomach. The owner, who is from Trinidad the cashier, and Karen, who is Jamaican all took exceptional care of me. They offered me tasting samples of different dishes, and were kind enough to give me a larger helping of the entree that I finally chose. I decided to dine in, so that I could hang out with Karen for a few minutes, and while there, I saw from the size of the line that business is starting to pick up. If you decide to go, say hello to Karen, and try the Jerk Chicken, Mac and Cheese, and the Brown Stew Chicken. All entree plates come with stewed cabbage and sweet plantains. Also the Tarry brand bottled fruit drinks are off the hook!
Great customer service! But these Oxtails are horrific and flavor less. Could not even finish them. Rice is disgusting. Best thing going was the plaintains.
Great food, friendly service. The fried plantains are delicious, the patties like an empanada was spicy and delicious with jerk chicken and the platters all looked good. bread pudding and ice cream was the perfect finishing touch. Small place where you order first.
After visiting one of my lady's favorite places Toni's Minnis, we decided to try out DCE. The customer service was good, but the food is God Awful..the oxtails taste like they were cooked in an air fryer. The fried 'sandpaper'chicken was disgusting and the rice was dry and tasteless definitely not worth the $60 spent!
Great little Caribbean Trini spot that is nice for dining in or doing takeout. So far I've tried the veggie patty, vegan street rice a little too salty, and vegetable roti good, but a little dry...please add more sauce to the filling. They've got a really nice menu selection with some unexpected gourmet patty flavors. And I spotted them cooking jerk chicken on a grill out front one day. I love that! Overall, this place is definitely more elevated than the average Caribbean takeout spot. Advice to the owners: Make more coco bread. You guys are always out.
