A historical building that one might just walk on by, if not for the large historical plaques attached to the side, which harkens in its history. Fraunces Tavern served in many capacities during its history, but the one that made it most famous was when it served as the headquarters for George Washington for a period of time. It was also host to a variety of secretive Sons of Liberty meetings during the Revolutionary period, and is now commemorated as a New York City Landmark. The attached museum is also very cool.
The American history that one receives by visiting this museum is phenomenal. The front two rooms were constructed in 1719 remain as they were then. George Washington drank beer here.
The museum is small but interesting. Some spaces are getting renovated. Also had a drink down in the tavern. Wonderful history.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
Went to a Frances Tavern architectural tour and ate at the restaurant on the first floor. Learning about the history/story of the building and the surrounding area prior to going inside on the upper museum floors gave a lot perspective and allowed for the imagination to recreate how it could have been looking through the windows. Also just gaining the knowledge of all the people who may/have walked through those doors and then eating at the tavern was a great experience. Lots of awes and feels. The food was good and the drinks are delicious. I recommend a whiskey flight for those of you who like to explore new whiskeys. They have an extensive collection and the bartenders know their stuff!
A small but well organized museum about George Washington and the location itself. Learnt a lot as a non US citizen. Staff was very friendly.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$6–10

A must-see when visiting Lower Manhattan. Where Washington bade his officers good-bye at the end of the Revolutionary War.
If you are interested in early American history and architecture, this is a very interesting place to visit. The museum occupies the second and third floors above the tavern. It is very well organized, is very informative, and has many interesting objects from the period. It's best to book a time slot online. Ticket is only $2. Highly recommended!!
“The Room Where It Happens” vibe when I stood in the same room where General George Washington gave his farewell to his officers at the end of the Revolution I love this block, it’s like a proud reminder of NYC before skyscrapers.
