Harry's

About

With its large oval booths and rich bronze leather banquets, the main dining room at Harry's Cafe & Steak caters to both Wall Streeters as well as residents

Story

A native of Sparta, Greece, Harry Poulakakos traveled to the United States in 1956 in hopes of finding a wealthy uncle in America. When the man turned out to be a coffee shop counterman, Harry took his first job in Brooklyn at an ice cream parlor. After a brief stint in Manhattan at George's restaurant learning the bar, Harry found himself at the historical Oscar's Delmonico's.
In 1972, Harry found the perfect space for his own venture, Harry's at Hanover Square, in the basement of the historical India House building. Together with his wife Adrienne, Harry successfully opened three locations, with additional spaces within the American Stock exchange building as well as in The Woolworth Building. Harry's at Hanover Square quickly became a Wall Street institution, and was immortalized in novels such as Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities as well as Brett Easton Ellis's American Psycho. In 1976, Adrienne gave birth to a son, Peter, whose birth was celebrated on the front page of The Wall Street Journal. As Peter grew he took pride in working within his father's restaurants, from sweeping the floor of the bar to eventually running the outgoing business during the summers.

For thirty years, Harry's at Hanover Square was a favorite haunt of traders who came to celebrate or commiserate over the state of the market. In 2003, following the death of his wife Adrienne, Harry shut the doors of the last remaining location. In 2006 Peter decided, along with his partners Michael Jewell and Danny McDonald, to revive Harry's with a fresh look and feel. After much consideration the large bar that had signified the old Harry's was removed and the restaurant was reborn.

Peter Poulakakos currently owns and operates 22 restaurants as well as a wine store, Vintry Fine Wines. Harry's remains the flagship of his burgeoning portfolio. Harry remains a consultant to his son, and can be found greeting customers six days a week at Harry's.

The best steakhouse burger I’ve had so far. Pricey but worth it for once a year. Top quality ingredients that blends in together perfectly. The beef was cooked to perfection. The bacon was smoked at the right temperature. The buns were as soft as a mothers kiss. This burger is definitely not your typical burger. You must try it at least once. The fries did its job as a partner. Customer service was on point. Ambiance, thumbs up. Street parking only. Expect a high bill. If you come here once every blue moon, the prices will not seem outrageous.
First off, the food is seriously good. It’s expensive, but everything was worth it. I especially enjoyed the swordfish steak. Secondly, the staff was incredibly kind. Antoine was very helpful, and recommend the best glass of Chardonnay I’ve ever had in my life, and I’m an avid Chardonnay drinker. If you’re looking for a swanky place on the lower east side, this is it!
I’m a Harry’s regular and it never disappoints. Usually go for the lobster cocktail but they didn’t have it this time. Lobster bisque is so good a nice portion. The steak was delicious!!
Beautiful atmosphere! It is a loud place, but personally it didn't bother us. For pop they have Coke products. They give you a glass of ice and a little glass bottle. For draft beer our table got Coors, Guinness and Duvel. Had a huge selection of alcohol, cocktails, wine, and draft beers. I didn't like their onion rings. They were to thick and they had 4-5 layers of onion in the ring. I had the bone in New York strip. It was delicious. I loved when it came out it was cut, and the staff serves you. They don't have A1 . They have their own sauce it was okay. The bathrooms were very clean. The whole restaurant was very clean. The staff was wonderful. They were in it. The second anyone needed another drink they were there to get it refilled. Their rolls were so good! Also the cheesecake and creme brulee were amazing! Definitely would be back. Oh they also made our Cesar salad table side. It was out of this world.
This is an absolutely amazing place to have diner. We bought the Holiday Feast to go on Christmas eve and it was incredible, sincerely the best decision that we took. The food was well-prepared and wrapped, everything ready to finish at home or serve at the moment. A few years ago we used to live pretty close to Harry's and always was a great option for special occasions. This time was and extraordinary surprise, I didn't imagine the great flavor of the dishes and fair portions. I really recommend it not only to enjoy in doors, also you can book the dinner for some important dates.
Great place for drinks and for steaks! I highly recommend trying the tiramisu alcohol shot for dessert instead of going off whatever they have on the menu. I was in town for business, but many locals also visit here too, its a great mix and a great social atmosphere!
My 5 stars is really a 4.5. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was perfect for our Friday late dinner. We did not have reservations but we’re able to be seated immediately. My husband ordered the Beef Wellington and I had the squid ink pasta. Both were delicious and just the right amount. We also enjoyed the polenta fries. Service was good, but just a touch cold. Not friendly, but not curt either. We would definitely go back if staying downtown again.
Probably the best meal I’ve had from a restaurant in a long time. Making a reservation was easy, my steak was cooked perfectly, and staff treated us wonderfully. Great ambience and an absolute must if you’re in the area.
The food was okay but the service was lacking. For example my girlfriend wanted to taste the moscato and the server said it wasn’t possible, however a different server came and allowed her to taste it. It was cold in the restaurant so 10 minutes into eating our food our plates and food were already cold. Overall I wouldn’t visit again.
I came to Harry’s on Friday during lunch and we went all out. My partner and I ordered the seafood tower with a whole gang load of sides. We also got the chocolate pudding for desert. The service was great. They usually only serve the seafood tower for dinner, but they agreed to throw it together for us in the middle of the day. We felt very taken care of.
