We are very happy with the care our brother is getting at Hawthorne Gardens. The staff are friendly and competent, and the Executive Director, Stacie Sheridan, values a strong community and quality care for each individual. She is responsive to needs and issues that arise and is accessible to residents and family members. There are lots of daily activities, as well as outings and special gatherings. We have eaten in the dining room and were impressed with the choices available and the quality of the food. We would highly recommend Hawthorne Gardens!
Overall, after searching for assisted facilities for my father last year, we as a family were taken back by the initial welcome we received. We were even given a tour on the spot, and since we were only looking for a pamphlet, we were happily taken back. Both Natalie and Melissa set the stage for what as been a very positive experience. With new management, Stacie has done an amazing job improving communication and an increased positivity. Residents have an amazing choice of daily activities, and Dad, an original “foodie,” likes his choices and quality. They are very specific to his requests. Medical care has been and should be a gold star, as the care dad receives daily for his many physical challenges is so appreciated. I will even hear little stories from Beth and caregivers that add to that dimension of care. From a smile and greeting from the front desk to concerns or questions regarding finances, I truly am happy with Hawthorne Gardens.
I just visited my brother in Assisted Living at Hawthorne Gardens for the first time since he moved there a year ago. I was very impressed with the facility and all the staff, especially Natalie at the front desk and Stacie Sheridan, the Executive Director. Hawthorne Gardens has a Zoom family council monthly meeting, in which I participate because I live out of town. I understand from listening to others that there has been a dramatic change for the better since Stacie took over. I had a meeting with Stacie and she was wonderful. She listened, was incredibly responsive, and so easy to talk with. I would definitely recommend Hawthorne Gardens.
This month my mother celebrates six years of residency at Hawthorne Gardens Assisted Living. We were satisfied with it from the start, the neighborhood setting, her room, the staff and service and the activities. All together it had a warm community feel. Then along came COVID and the ensuing ripple of problems stemming from that horrible year hard to find staff, ever increasing costs, etc. Most importantly, there was a lack of consistent, strong leadership at the top. Within the last few months, however, things have been markedly looking up. Stacie, the new director, is putting a system back in place. Once again there are standards and accountability, permanent staff in key positions and regular communication. The housekeeping services which were sporadic have been restored, the food is improved, and caregiving is provided with a caring, compassionate touch. A new activity director is making a positive difference. I sense that Hawthorne Gardens is becoming the community it was when Mom first came here. I encourage anyone looking at Senior Care facilities to take a look at what Hawthorne Gardens has to offer.
Wonderful place with a home-like feel. They really foster a sense of community here. The staff is very attentive and caring, especially Natalie at the front desk. Couldn't have asked for better care for my mom.
As a former employee at Hawthorne Gardens, I feel like I can attest to what happens behind the scenes at the community. The executive director, Stacie, is condescending to both staff and residents and makes no efforts to improve staffing in Assisted Living or Memory Care and doesn’t bat an eye when staffing ratios are dangerous for the staff and residents. There are employees that should be reprimanded yet she chooses to praise them and she embarrasses and falsely accuses the staff that is making an effort on behalf of their residents. They push moving in residents even though the building is 90% agency and they cant keep staff. The only person that sticks up for the staff is the HWD but the ED spreads lies and rumors about the HWD/RN. When training schedules are set for caregivers and med techs, they ignore those and put untrained new employees on the floor or the front desk and often lose them. They ignore policy and procedure from the company and the executive director often verbalizes how much she dislikes her boss and the company as a whole. They openly show favorites to residents and employees. Some of the care team members care about the residents and are so kind to everyone, there are care team members that outright lie to family members and the executive director does nothing when she is told. The only reason I’m giving two stars is because the staff that tries is top tier, they love their job and residents. If this was based solely on management, it would be -100 stars.
Hawthorne Gardens has had an amazing recovery from some three years ago when a change of management and Covid caused a plummet in quality; now stability in the form of a well qualified, caring, and experienced director, Stacie, has transformed the assisted living facility into a place where I feel good having my mom living in. The food, which is so important to people in a facility has vastly improved thanks to a newly hired chef, Atilla, who strives to prepare menus that are thoughtfully created and well plated, which in most facilities is not the norm. I was there today in memory care where my mom is, and sat for awhile as lunch was being served; it was a wonderful aromatic bean soup with bits of carrot and the main course was rice with a meat sauce and green beans- the whole lunch looked and smelled very good. New housekeeping has upped the level of cleanliness, the dining room in Memory care has new paint and cheerful curtains. Staffing additions have added to the number of kind, and thoughtful carers to the team. All in all, a very welcome trajectory upwards that Stacie and her team are still looking for ways to improve and add to the quality of living for men and women who need to be cared for.
I do not recommend Hawthorne Gardens for your loved ones. The Executive Director is condescending to both staff and families. There is a staffing problem in Oregon and this place is not well staffed. Sometimes there are just two staff members for 27 residents on the memory care floor. Despite the acknowledgement from management that there is a staffing problem, they continue to move in new residents. The residents' rooms smell of days old urine. Staff is not supported by management. Despite efforts to support management, they continue to degrade the staff which leads to a high turnover rate and an unhappy staff. There are often no activities because the activities director is pulled away to do caregiving. Residents sit around and watch TV all day with nothing to do. The staff are good people but they are overworked and often have to pull double shifts.
I can only speak to the Assisted Living area. The food has become much better, with several choices and an obvious focus on improving the quality with more fresh foods and items cooked from scratch. I've observed that the current care staff members genuinely care about the residents. It's challenging work and takes a special person to do it well. I also appreciate the small size of the community and the quiet residential neighborhood. My mother has lived there for 7 years and tells me she is very content, which makes me happy.
I love working at Hawthorne Gardens! We are more than a community and much like a family. I have worked here for 15 months and can say it is one of the most loving, caring, kind environments I have ever had the pleasure of being employed in. The residents who live in the community, love it! Many of which have been here for many years. They enjoy being able to communicate freely with managers about health concerns and other issues that may arise. One of my favorite things about Hawthorne Gardens is the caring, knowledgeable staff. They are always yearning to learn more and know more information about the population that we serve. The management company, Artegan, is also responsive, kind, and around. This is the first company where the management company is so involved and acutely aware of what is going on. And it is nice!
