In life, you get what you pay for. Therefore, I wasn't in a position to be too choosy. The room had terrific air conditioning and the bathrooms were pretty good. You have a kitchen to cook in but no breakfast is provided. Be prepared to haul your luggage up some very steep stairs if you have a back injury of some sort. It boasts a fairly decent location, being 25 minutes away from the White House. However, staff give the impression they don't really want you there during the day.
Enjoyed my stay very much. The rooms were a little hot, but there was AC, also a door to a patio and window in my room which created a cross breeze when opened. Slightly unclean sheets washed after each person leaves, but blankets do not appear to be washed as often. Theft is low, but still present someone ate some of my food despite it being labeled, and a pair of leggings got snatched while hanging to dry. Over all the house is great: it has good common areas, a great backyard/outdoor space, is very close to public transit & amenities, is very affordable, and has a no lock out policy.
This is not a hostel for short term stay. There are people who been staying here for almost or over a year. The whole atmosphere is filled with negativity and the people who have made this there home act as of they are the owner specially, specially two elderly guest John and Ava who tend to make guests feel uncomfortable. Specially Ava who thinks she own the Female dorm tends to store foods under neat her bed and made room smell disgusting, I had noticed fruit flies in the room several times. Neither of care takers seem to bother take actions and do something about this whole situation.
this was my first time staying in a hostel and i loved it here! the staff and other guests were extremely chill and the hostel itself is beautiful with a great backyard area to chill in. not much around the hostel but it's 30 seconds from the metro. can't beat it for the price!!!Rooms: 3/5
It was my firat time in a hostel and i was very skeptical to begin with but i was blown away. It's a lovely establishment. Everyone was friendly and the owners were very accommodating. The place was nice and clean. The linen was clean. I will definitely go there again.
This hostel is awful! I had the worst experience that I have ever had since I began using hostels. My stay began fine. It went south when, as I sat and watched T.V. on Saturday evening, an unkempt long haired, long bearded man came into the guest living room and asked me what room I was in. Now, I am a female. Why on earth would I tell this man, who looked like a homeless person, what room I was in. When I said I'm not telling you what room I'm in, he became indignant and extremely irate. He snatched the remote, turned the T.V. off and called the police! All the while screaming at me telling me that he is in charge and that I had better tell him what room I was in! First, the man who checked me in Ron never told me who or if he had staff to supervise. I had only met him. He never said that this man was a staff member. I have stayed at other hostels and have been treated respectfully and with kindness and dignity. And here's the kicker, the "owner/ manager" then sent me an email telling me that I should have just told him what room I was in! Can you believe this. I asked " how many other people did he ask what room they were in?" NONE. Really! Why would I a female sitting in the living room alone watching T.V. give a strange man my room number? What these people need to do is let their guests' know who there staff is! I advise all females, in particular, to be very careful about staying at this hostel. They've got this loose cannon running around there! And they NEVER even offered me an apology! Awful, Awful place to stay for a female. Never again. I do not recommend this hostel. EVER!
Crazy Place!! A plus for the location. Only 12 minutes to downtown DC by train 3-4$. They have a nice garden and nice balcony. The staff is totally confused but friendly. They told us on the phone there was a parking lot but there wasn't. The room and the shared bathrooms were a little dirty and the bed was just horrible and disgusting. Everything is very old and shabby but works.
Racist and unwelcome atmosphere--I felt very disrespected the whole time I was there. Manager banged on my door to communicate and intruded on my space, touching my belongings without permission. Had the nerve to even throw away food I'd clearly labeled. I wouldn't recommend it to international guests at all. Plus the downstairs bathroom is filthy--tub crawling with bugs, and looks like health code violation. I've never had such as bad experience in any other D.C. hostel and I've frequented many.
I stayed at this hostel a couple of times, about one year apart. Also stayed at other hostels in DC. This Hilltop hostel is, by far, the worst hostel in DC. Cheap, plastic bed, dirty bathrooms, very old and stained sheets and pillow cases, homeless looking people said they own the place, and the place smelled awful. The only good thing about this place is the fact that it's right across from the train station.
They are like family! Ron and Lori are very nice and the Woodsmen keeps the place nice and clean! JC is the nicest host you ever want to meet and they all treat you like your family! They have a big comfy hammock under a big ole walnut tree and squirrels and birds are your morning scenery!
