I engaged Irwin’s to come out on 04/26/2017 and replace a tambour door mechanism. They (and others) had indicated issues with parts procurement for tambour doors, so I found the correct replacement part myself. A fellow from Irwin’s came out, and decided he would rather repair the old unit than use my brand new replacement part, which he confirmed was identical to the installed unit. After guaranteeing it would be “good as new”, I reluctantly agreed to defer to his expertise. Unfortunately, this repair attempt held up for all of about 12 weeks of very light use. I live alone, and this door sees an average use of once per day.

Apparently the door was being partially supported by friction along the track after the repair, rather than exclusively by spring tension, and that friction was increasingly less effective with the passage of a little time/use. So either Irwin’s tech had not wound the spring tightly enough (initial failure caused by the spring unwinding completely because a retaining staple had popped out) or he should simply not have reused the spring after it had completely unwound. This faulty repair resulted in a door that will not stay up when opened and is slowly unwinding up top, reverting to the same state of disrepair that prompted me to hire them in the first place. 

After multiple contact attempts, I finally received a call back. During this astonishing exchange, Don indicated that the tech who came to my home only a few weeks prior was no longer employed there. He continued with 'too bad for you, do you want to pay us again to come out and have a look?' saying he would charge $100 to send a different tech out to assess the quality of their previous work. He then added that I would also be charged their full hourly rate to address and correct the faulty repair. No warranty no matter what, no reduced rate – nothing. I could hardly believe my ears, I swear I’m not making this up.

This is not a refinishing job, in which work might be assessed via cursory inspection. This was a mechanical repair, not much different than having your automobile transmission repaired. Imagine a mechanic who you paid a tidy sum to repair your transmission suggesting you pay twice to address a recurrence several weeks later. Oh, and you’ll have to pay for towing, too. Outrageous barely begins to cover it.

Fantastic!!!  I knocked over and broke a high end wooden chair that was part of a large set and the corner, shattered.  My wife packed my bags for me knowing it could not be fixed.  Then Irwin's stepped in to save the day.   They did such an awesome repair job I mixed it in with our other chairs and challenged my wife to pick it out.   When she couldn't, she let me unpack..    LOL

Irwin's Furniture Restoration is by far the most talented restoration experts in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. My family and I have had many pieces of furniture restored or reupholstered throughout the years and Irwin's is the most reliable. You can expect your furniture to return looking better then it did when it was new!
