This is what a pharmacy/drugstore should be. Attentive, pleasant service from a knowledgeable pharmacist and staff members. It's not a fancy shop, but you'll immediately see the care with which all is neatly displayed and attended to. This is the anti-chain drugstore experience — real service and people who enjoy their work. Also, things aren't locked up like at the big chains, and prices are actually quite good. Give it a try.
We are so very grateful to have Ivan in neighborhood as well as everyone who works there with him!. He's been a hero to our family and we don't know what we'd do without him.
This place is great! I needed to buy expensive medication, without insurance, for my dog. The price at Duane Reade $500, reduced to $170 with a coupon from GoodRx. One of the pharmacists at Duane Reade pulled me aside and told me to go to Ivan Pharmacy, where the same exact medication was $60. Ivan got me the prescription quickly and efficiently, and at less than half the price of the chain pharmacy. Definitely going back, and already told my vet so she can send her other patients there. Thank you!
After 50 plus years of painful arms and egg-sized lumps from a flu shot, Ivan bet me that I wouldn’t get a “ lump” post flu vaccination. YOU WON, Ivan. And this from a retired physician who gave no less than thousands of flu shots in a 35 year career. Congrats. Everyone, RUN, don’t WALK, to get your immunizations at Ivan. PS. Did I mention it was also the most painless vaccination I’ve ever had in 71 years. Bertha Bauer, MD Addendum: Just had RSV which some patients say is a tough vaccine due to headache. Again, nothing. No pain, no side effects due tomIvan using the Pfizer over Glaxo vaccine. Stupendous .
Excellent service! I seldom need a pharmacy, but when I do, I go to Ivan Pharmacy. Calm, knowledgeable, helpful, professional. Ivan is excellent, as is all of the staff I have encountered.
I don't often write reviews, but in this case I will sacrifice some of my privacy in the interest of the public good. I am a recipient of traditional Medicare. I just left Ivan Pharmacy with 180 pills to control my blood pressure--a 90 day supply. The cost to me was $45. An hour earlier I had gone across the street from my apartment to CVS Pharmacy on Amsterdam Ave to get the prescription filled. The price there was a bit over $200 for a 60 day supply. This illustrates why we need the government to be able to negotiate the cost of prescription drugs for Medicare recipients. Such regulation would save taxpayers and beneficiaries billions of dollars a year. It also illustrates why large pharmacies like CVS should be heavily taxed. Transfer your prescriptions from CVS to Ivan Pharmacy and save. Ivan Pharmacy is also an outstanding neighborhood retailer for quality children's literature, art supplies and toys. It's a great place to shop for that present for the birthday party coming up soon. Make-up, medical supplies, underwear, socks, water bottles and so many other miscellaneous items are available at Ivan Pharmacy. Shop local!
If 0 stars were available I'd choose that as an option. I went here to get my Covid Bivalent vaccine. The pharmacist could not have been more rude and obnoxious. First he was running late, which is fine I understand in this city everyone is running late. However when it was finally my turn, he didn't even want to answer simple questions like possible side effects I guess I could just google those... but then again, why be a pharmacist if you don't want to answer.... Next he was extracting the liquid into the needle and talking to someone behind a tall counter I prayed he was paying attention. Here's the really great part though, as he's about to jab me ... I instinctively moved back at the site of a needle. Instead of being nice he raised his voice at me and said "I HAVE 6 OTHER PEOPLE AFTER YOU" and without any further hesitation jabbed me. I didn't need him to hold my hand, but if my reflex at seeing a needle is to move back a bit, and I didn't even say a word, his was to be rude. Maybe this isn't the right profession for ya bud. I guess that's the kind of service/world/city we live in... Just thought a private pharmacy would treat you better than a big chain store boy I was wrong!. In short? Go somewhere else.
Ivan is the BEST pharmacist - a real old school, know and care about your customers kind of man. He called me after surgery to make sure I was ok and to make sure I understood my medications. He makes good OTC recommendations. Everyone in the shop is kind.
My experience with Ivan was nothing short of traumatizing. I am an older mom with a 2-year old toddler who attends daycare around the corner. Ivan's store has toys and stuffed animals in the window, so of course my little one is attracted to the store and wants to go running in if we take that route home. Front and center is a bright, colorful display of plastic reader glasses and sunglasses that reaches almost to the floor. My son was mesmerized. He shouted with glee, and touched a few, causing them to become lopsided on the display and a pair to fall, though nothing was damaged they're plastic. I apologized to the female clerk and quickly ushered my son out. The encounter lasted about 30 seconds, a minute at the most. A few weeks later it happened again. This time Ivan was there. He became ENRAGED! He went off the rails. He started yelling at me as I was trying to straighten out the glasses and get my squirming 2-year old back into his stroller. I apologized over and over, and offered to buy a pair of glasses, even though there was no damage. At first he said ok, but then started up again -- yelling about the "whole unit." Basically the glasses on the lower part of the display were hanging lopsided. I said "ok ok, I apologize, there's no damage, and I'll buy these glasses. Why are you still yelling at me?" He stormed off and his female assistant answered: "Well, you've been here before, and we've tried to be understanding." This is the most disturbing part of all. This is an ugly, patriarchal trope: A man behaves abusively toward a woman, and another woman stands by his side and justifies his behavior, explaining to the victim why she deserves to treated that way. Toxic masculinity is a universal phenomenon and must be called out. I know others have had similar experiences here.
Ivan, the pharmacist, deeply knowledgeable, personifies the long term relationships and care that define a neighborhood. His medical advice is excellent, the auxiliary products he sells carefully vetted, he's moral enough not to sell cigarettes! In recent years he's added an enticing selection of choice children's books, puzzles, and stuffed animals. Most of his clients, understandably, remain with him for decades, eschewing the generic drug chains that pop up on every corner.
